NASHVILLE, Tennessee - Tennessee State celebrated its 100th anniversary homecoming Saturday night, but the Tigers didn’t have much to celebrate until the offense finally joined the party.
And that didn’t happen until the second half when TSU scored four touchdowns in a stretch of 9:37 on the way to blowing out Arkansas-Pine Bluff 40-13.
A crowd of 31,765, an LP Field record for TSU, watched the Tigers improve to 5-0 for the first time since 2001.
“Being 5-0 means a lot. It means we’ve already won as many games this year as we won all of last year,” said TSU coach Rod Reed, who in his third season.
“That’s an accomplishment within itself, but it’s still a long season. We’ve still got six football games to play and we’re going into the meat of our schedule right now and facing a tough, tough Eastern Kentucky team next week.”
It was the Tigers’ most lopsided victory of the season, but they actually trailed 13-12 to the Golden Lions (3-2) at the midway point in the third quarter.
The fireworks began for TSU after that.
