Alabama State fighting to keep SWAC title hopes alive in Magic City Classic

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama  --  Magic City Classic week is special for a lot of reasons.

It's about friends, reuniting with old college buddies and meeting new ones. It's about fun.  Birmingham is pulling out all the stops prior to the 2:30 p.m. kickoff between Alabama A&M and Alabama State. The official schedule of events includes an alumni pep rally, scholarship breakfast, parade and tailgate party.

But even with all the festivities that precede the main event, it's also about football. This year's game has huge implications for both team's hopes of returning to Legion Field to play in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship game December 8th.

At 6-1 and 5-1 in the conference, Alabama A&M, last year's conference runner-up, controls its own destiny. A game ahead of Alabama State (4-3, 4-2) and Jackson State (4-4-4-2) in the eastern division standings, if the Bulldogs win out, they're in.
