XU sophomores Materre, Soifer win GCAC weekly honors

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana sophomores Amanda Materre and Nikita Soifer are the first Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Players of the Week in tennis for the spring 2013 semester.

Materre, from Richmond, Texas, and a graduate of Westside High School, was 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles to help the Gold Nuggets win dual matches against NAIA No. 18 Oklahoma Baptist and NCAA Division I member Prairie View A&M.

On Friday she defeated OBU's Mariana Rosa, No. 44 in the ITA/NAIA singles rankings, 6-1, 6-2.

Nikita Soifer
Soifer, from Beer Sheva, Israel, and a graduate of Hof Hasharon High School, was 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles to help the Gold Rush win 2-of-3 duals. He clinched Xavier's 4-3 victory against Prairie View on Saturday with a 6-3, 6-0 victory against Craig Wiltz.
    

Both XU teams were to play at Louisiana-Lafayette today. New NAIA top-25 coaches polls for men and women were to be announced by late this afternoon. The next dual at the new XU Tennis Center will start at 2 p.m. Saturday against McNeese State's women.
