Eight Signees from North Carolina, Including Four from State Champions Hillside High

DURHAM, N.C. – Twenty-six student-athletes signed national letters of intent on Wednesday (Feb. 2) to become part of head football coach Henry Frazier III’s first recruiting class at North Carolina Central University.

The 2011 NCCU recruiting class consists of 23 high school seniors and three transfers. Among the signees are 12 linemen (6 offense, 6 defense), five defensive backs, two linebackers, two wide receivers, a quarterback, running back, fullback, tight end and a return specialist.

“Our goal was to recruit an athlete at every position, just to create some competition,” said Frazier, who took over the Eagles gridiron program on Jan. 3. “That’s what we were able to do.

Prairie View, Southern set for Classic week

Prairie View head football coach Henry Frazier sees his team's "home" game with Southern at Independence Stadium on Saturday as a good thing.

"That (playing at a neutral site) is pretty much how it is with us," Frazier said. "We only play three games at our stadium. We'll play at Reliant Stadium, at the Cotton Bowl, at the Independence Bowl, and all of those are our home games.

"It's a good thing and a good problem to have. We have definitely outgrown our little high school stadium that we have. So that's a good thing. We're kind of used to it."

Fast finish has Prairie View hopeful for this fall

Prairie View aims to build on 7-3 mark with senior quarterback Mark Spivey, who is getting a sixth season of eligibility for a medical hardship. Spivey went 5-1 as a starter in the Panthers’ last six games in 2007.

In past seasons, three or four wins would have counted as a sign of progress for Prairie View A&M, a program that had been starving for positive attention. This year, the bar is raised much higher for a Panthers team that comes off a 7-3 season, returns 18 starters and has become the trendy pick to overtake Southwestern Athletic Conference stalwarts Grambling State and Southern for the West division title. Optimism is overflowing for coach Henry Frazier’s squad, which last year delivered the school’s first winning campaign in 31 seasons.

“It’s (the expectations) bigger than last year. It’s very exciting,” said running back Donald Babers. “Everybody’s anticipating the season.” Prairie View finished 5-1 to close out 2007, due in part to an offense that jelled behind quarterback Mark Spivey. Spivey fired seven of his nine touchdown passes in the last two games, giving the offense — which had become run-oriented — some much needed balance.

Prairie View elevates its play, goals

PVAMU returns 10 veterans to a stingy defense that averaged 15.2 points per contest in 2007, third lowest in the Football Championship Subdivision (1-AA).

Work left for Prairie View

Nearly nine months after finishing their first winning season since 1976, the Prairie View A&M Panthers got their 2008 fall camp under way with a practice Monday night. The coaches, the drills and most of the faces were the same from last season, but the camp’s theme was significantly different.

Last year, the Panthers’ theme was to “dig deep,” something they did well down the stretch, winning five of their last six games to finish 7-3. But with a squad that returns nine starters on offense, 10 on defense and two on special teams, the Panthers plan to take care of “unfinished business” this season. Prairie View coach Henry Frazier III believes this year’s team can elevate the program to a higher level.

Prairie View A&M Panthers eager to start 2008 title run

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas- Fresh off a history making 7-3 season the Prairie View A&M Panthers football team is set to kickoff their spring workouts. The Panthers 2008 camp will be a valuable tool in assisting the PVAMU coaching staff with the evaluation of their talent as well as accessing needs of improvement.

“Spring football is a huge asset for our coaching staff,” said head coach Henry Frazier III. “The practice sessions give us a great indication as to how well our players are absorbing the schemes and fundamentals that we’re trying to teach them.”

The 2008 PVAMU Panthers football team will feature a veteran unit headlined by the return of over 45 lettermen. Frazier feels that his team’s depth and experience will pay big dividends for the program next season.
