End of playing days is only the beginning for Williams

During the ambulance ride to the hospital, Harry Williams asked someone to phone his dad. He knew his parents back in Birmingham, Ala., had been watching the Houston Texans-Dallas Cowboys preseason game that night in the summer of 2008. He knew they'd seen the play, seen him down on the field. He knew they would have noticed his lifeless arms and legs taped into place, seen him carted off the field and loaded into an ambulance.

"My mama is like a lioness when it comes to her kids," Williams said. "No one messes with her kids. For her to see me like that, and for her to be so far away, I knew she was going crazy. "Somebody dialed the phone and held it to my ear. I asked Daddy, 'How is Mama doing?' He said, 'Not too good.' " His dad asked the question he dreaded asking. "I can't feel nothing, Daddy," Williams said. "But, Daddy, don't tell Mama." He'd begun to cry as they loaded him into the ambulance, and almost two years later, some of it is still a blur. Williams is outgoing and talkative, one of those people who likes to laugh. To know him is to like him.














Former NFL Houston Texans wide receiver Harry Williams is at home on the football field as a volunteer assistant for Prairie View A&M University, as he completes his degree. Williams suffered a career ending fracture of the C3 vertebra in a Texans - Cowboys game in August 2008.

Houston Texans cut QB Quinn Gray

Photo: Former Florida A&M University star quarterback Quinn Gray may have to go to the CFL to get a legitimate opportunity to develop his NFL caliber skills. Gray was the Jacksonville Jaguars #2 quarterback last season.

The Texans released free-agent quarterback Quinn Gray, making the decision instead to work to develop Shane Boyd and rookie Alex Brink. "I just think that from a fit standpoint with our football team, it made more sense for us to let (Gray) go now," general manager Rick Smith said. "I still think this guy's a quality NFL quarterback, and I think he's going to have a good career. It's just not a fit here.

"My philosophy is if I've got a veteran player playing in this league and I don't see the opportunity or feel like I can give them a fair opportunity to make a football team, then I want to give them a fair opportunity somewhere else," coach Gary Kubiak said. "I felt that way with both those players and with where they are at those positions. Mainly at the quarterback positions, I made a decision to work with those two young players."

It's official: Backup QB Quinn Gray signs with Texans

Photo: Former Florida A&M University/NFL Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Quinn Gray signed today with the Houston Texans.

As expected, free agent quarterback Quinn Gray signed a one-year contract with the Texans today. Gray, who played his first five seasons with Jacksonville, signed a one-year deal for the $605,000 minimum and a $40,000 signing bonus.

Gray was 2-2 as a starter last season, including victories over Tampa Bay and Tennessee and losses to New Orleans and the Texans. Gray arrived in Houston on Sunday and he is spending today at Reliant Stadium, meeting with head coach Gary Kubiak and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.
