North Carolina A&T's Veney Announces His Resignation

EARL MONROE HILTON III
DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
NORTH CAROLINA A&T STATE UNIVERSITY
GREENSBORO, North Carolina (12/14/2011)-- North Carolina A&T Director of Athletics Earl Hilton accepted the resignation of Tony Veney as the school's Director of Track and Field Programs, today.

Effective immediately, longtime assistant James Daniels will serve as the program's acting director until a permanent replacement is appointed. North Carolina A&T will begin a national search for the position this spring.

Daniels has coached sprinters and hurdlers at N.C. A&T since 2001. Twenty-six school records in sprint or hurdle events have fallen during his tenure. Also during his 10-year span, the Aggies won 28 MEAC Championships in either a sprint or a hurdle event. Sixteen of those championships came during the outdoor season.

In addition, he has coached seven relay teams to either MEAC indoor or outdoor titles.

Athletes have also experienced a few firsts under Daniels' tutelage. Alexandria Spruiel (400m) and hurdler Loreal Smith were the first two female All-Americans in school history, earning the honors during both track seasons in 2009. On the men's side, he coached Calesio Newman to three straight 100 meter MEAC Championships, and Newman, who recently competed in the Pan Am Games, became the first Aggie to be named to a USATF National Team.

"While we were looking forward to utilizing coach Veney's vast experience in track and field to elevate our track and field programs and events, we understand and respect the personal decision he had to make for he and his family," said Hilton. "We as a university family, wish him all the best in his future endeavors. As the track and field indoor and outdoor seasons approach, our goal and mission continues to be one of providing the best platform for our student-athletes to prosper academically and athletically. We trust coach Daniels can provide the type of leadership necessary to ensure a smooth transition, while still keeping the team competitive throughout the year."

Veney's hiring was announced on July 1, 2011. Veney's previous coaching positions included stops at UCLA, Portland State, the University of Oregon and Cal State Los Angeles. Prior to coming to N.C. A&T, Veney was the head track and field coach at Ventura Community College.

The Aggies indoor season begins with a two day event, January 12-13, at Virginia Tech. The indoor season will roll into the outdoor season, which begins the weekend of March 16-17 at Wake Forest University.

The Aggies had five players score in double figures. The Aggies are 54-12 at home under head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs. What did she say?: "As I was coaching the game tonight, I looked, and I saw, and I thought, 'My goodness, look at our future'". I mean seriously, it is a great future."

-N.C. A&T head women's basketball coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs after their 103-61 win on Tuesday.

The "Starting Five" - Today's Top Storylines
1) Liberty will attempt to become a rare road team to emerge from North Carolina A&T's Corbett Sports Center with a victory. In 2007-08, the Lady Flames were the only visiting team to win on the Aggies' home floor. Since that game, North Carolina A&T is 38-4 on its home court.

2) The Lady Flames are playing in Greensboro, N.C. for the second Friday in a row. Last Friday, Liberty tipped off the 2011-12 season with a 61-46 win at UNC Greensboro.

3) Liberty's Carey Green and North Carolina A&T's Patricia Cage-Bibbs rank among the nation's elite women's basketball coaches. Green boasts a sterling .751 career winning percentage, while Cage-Bibbs has racked up 487 coaching wins during her time at Grambling, Hampton and North Carolina A&T.

4) Liberty redshirt senior center Avery Warley will look to continue her torrid rebounding pace to start the season. She has grabbed 33 rebounds in the first two games, including 19 Tuesday versus VCU. Warley has nabbed 11 boards in each of her two career meetings with North Carolina A&T.

5) The game will feature a battle between North Carolina A&T's high-powered offense (77.3 ppg) and Liberty's stingy defense (49.0 ppg allowed).

A&T Probable Starters: G Mikala Scott (5-11, SO., Dorman, S.C.); G Tracy King (5-10, SO., Alexandria, Va.); G/F JaQuayla Berry (5-11, JR., Douglas, Ga.); G Amber Calvin (5-8, R-SO., Fayetteville, N.C.); C Nikia Gorham (6-2, JR., Bowie, Md.).

Notes and Anecdotes
-- Liberty is playing in Greensboro, N.C. for the second consecutive Friday, after opening the season with a 61-46 win at UNC Greensboro on Nov. 11.

-- North Carolina A&T has played well at the Corbett Sports Center in recent years. In 2007-08, Liberty was the only visiting team to win at North Carolina A&T. Since that game, the Aggies are 38-4 at home.

-- Both Carey Green and Patricia Cage-Bibbs rank among the nation's elite coaches. Green is ranked 11th among active Division I women's basketball coaches for winning percentage, while Cage-Bibbs sits 27th among active Division I women's basketball coaches in victories.

-- Since North Carolina A&T's last win over Liberty, the Lady Flames have won 13 Big South titles and made 13 NCAA Tournament appearances.

Aggie-Eagle Classic 2011

Greensboro, North Carolina -- Dating all the way back to 1924, the N. C. A&T Aggies and the North Carolina Central Eagles will meet at the line of scrimmage to renew an 87-year-old rivalry.

The historical football game between A&T and the N. C. Central is perhaps one of the most anticipated, emotional, and oldest rivalry games in black college football.

"To me it's like a second homecoming of sorts," said Bonnie Newman Davis endowed A&T professor and alumna. The two teams played each other every year since 1924 except for six times. The last time they didn't meet was in 2006.

From 1994-2005 the two teams have met at a neutral site in Raleigh for the official "Aggie-Eagle Classic." However, now the game is technically no longer named the Aggie-Eagle Classic but is now just a regular season conference game, but the title since then has lived on.

Former DSU Hornet and N.C. A&T Aggie sign with UFL teams

Washington, D.C. - Former Delaware State University offensive tackle Darryl Hicks (Boston, Mass.) has signed a contract with the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League. Hicks competed for the Hornets during the 2009 and 2010 seasons after transferring from Hudson Valley Community College. He was a starting tackle in each of his 21 games at Delaware State.

During the 2010 season, Hicks helped lead the Hornets to a MEAC-best 248.9 passing yards per game. DSU was also No. 2 in the league with a 134.8 pass efficiency rating last year. Hicks was recognized as a MEAC scholar-athlete during his two years at Delaware State.

The 2011 United Football League season begins Aug. 14.

The Virginia Destroyers added another veteran tailback to the offensive backfield in Maurice Hicks. Hicks, who will turn 33 on July 22, is expected to carry the load at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.  The former North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University running back from Emporia, Virginia was previously signed by the UFL Florida Tuskers (2010); NFL Minnesota Vikings (2008); San Francisco 49ers (2003-2007); and NFL Chicago Bears (2002).

While at A&T, Hicks finished his college career with a school-record 2,812 rushing yards. As a senior, he was a third team Division I-AA All-American selection, the Black College Offensive Player of the Year, a first team All-MEAC selection, and he led the MEAC in rushing yards with 1,325 rushing yards. During his senior season, in a game against Morgan State University, he broke the NCAA Division I and II single game rushing records by rushing for 437 rushing yards. As a junior, he was a first team All-MEAC selection, after rushing for 1,487 yards. Hicks at  5-11/205 was the number two back during his career at San Francisco.

The Virginia Destroyers are under the command of  head coach/general manager Marty Schottenheimer, a former head coach of the Washington Redskins.

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University split a home baseball doubleheader against visiting North Carolina A&T of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Saturday afternoon at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville. The Lancers (24-14) won the first game versus the Aggies (13-24) by a score of 7-6 in 10 innings before falling 2-1 in the second game. Senior captain Brant Jones|Richmond (Monacan) had three hits, including a triple and a double, with an RBI in the opener while junior Mark Montgomery| Williamsburg (Bruton) earned the pitching win with the final three innings of scoreless relief on the mound. In game one, Longwood allowed the Aggies to take a 4-0 lead through four innings en route to leading 5-0 in the fifth before the Lancers put three runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth to trail 5-3. The visitors made it 6-3 with a run in the sixth, but the hosts scored three runs in the seventh to tie it at 6-6 and force extra innings during the scheduled seven-inning contest. It remained tied until the bottom of the 10th when Longwood finally pushed across the winning run with two outs, unearned via a throwing error, nonetheless. Freshman Scott Burkett|Williamsburg (Jamestown) (2-5, rbi) reached on a separate throwing error to open the at-bat, moved to second on a single by sophomore Justin Lacy|Glen Allen (J.R. Tucker) (2-5), and scored the decisive run after advancing to third on a bunt-single to the pitcher from junior Dustin Sollars|Midlothian (Cosby) (2-5) and continuing on across the plate when the pitcher threw wildly to first base on the play.

North Carolina A&T will lose baseball coach after season

Coach Keith Shumate
Baseball coach Keith Shumate, who has led N.C. A&T to the MEAC championship game four of the last six seasons, resigned Tuesday effective July 31.

Shumate led the Aggies to a school-record 31 victories last season, and his 2005 team won the MEAC championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament. Shumate, now in his 15th season, has 294 victories and counting.

When Shumate took over in 1997, A&T was coming off a 4-45 season. Since then he has coached 17 All-MEAC first-teamers, 11 players who signed pro contracts, 5 major-league draft picks and 3 All-Americans.

Aggies Hit Four Home Runs, Sweep UMES

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Injuries to the North Carolina A&T pitching staff and to its everyday lineup has made the game of baseball tough for the Aggies this season.

But on Sunday it was back to the good old days. Several North Carolina A&T batters had multiple-hit afternoons, and the Aggies didn't have to use a lot of arms to work numerous innings. The result was a 14-3 and 12-5 doubleheader sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore at War Memorial Stadium.

Marquis Riley, Xavier Macklin, Luke Tendler and Dairio Little all homered on Sunday. Little had had three RBIs in the second game, while Little had two. Carvell Copeland went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. N.C. A&T put the second game away with an eight-run fifth inning.

Defense Dominates N.C. A&T Spring Game

GREENSBORO, N.C. - When a coach of Rod Broadway's considerable reputation steps on the field, expectations soar without hesitation. But following North Carolina A&T's annual Spring Football Game on Saturday, the first-year Aggies head coach had one reminder: "It's only been 15 days."

Broadway was cautious about being too critical of his team. He understands many of his players are learning a new system and a new coaching staff for the third time in four years.

"Our goal is simple," said Broadway. "We're just going to get better. We're going to get it turned around. I don't know how much time that will take us because we're down so far when you talk about scholarships and (Academic Progress Rate). But once we get our scholarships back, we'll be okay."

The Aggies concluded their spring session at Aggie Stadium with Saturday's scrimmage clearing showing the defense is ahead of the offense. After the Aggies ran 100 plays, the gold-jerseyed Aggies defense recorded four turnovers and four three and outs to come away with a 26-10 win over the offense in blue.

Defensive back Travis Crosby and linebacker Ben Binder led the Aggies defense with eight tackles apiece. Crosby also forced and recovered a fumble. D'Vonte Graham, who led the MEAC interceptions last season, had one on Saturday.

"I thought our defense played fairly well," said Broadway. "We're a little bit undersized on defense so we have to move around quite a bit."

Who wasn't playing on offense was as notable as who was. First-team All-MEAC running back Mike Mayhew did not play. Also on the sideline was quarterback Lewis Kindle. Kindle missed all of last season with an ACL injury. He is still recovering from last October's knee surgery, and has not been cleared to play at full speed.

His absence left the quarterbacking duties in the hands of Terrence Webb and Ricky Lewis. The two alternated possessions, and both saw their passing numbers hurt by dropped passes. Lewis threw for 80 yards on 8-for-19 passing with a touchdown and an interception. The Aggies offense put its first points on the board during the sixth possession of the afternoon.

It was a 12-play, 53-yard drive that ended with a 34-yard field goal from Sullivan Shidler. The key play was a 22-yard run through the middle by Chauncey Burgess. Burgess finished the day with 118 yards on 20 carries. Larry Raper chipped in with 71 yards on 17 carries. Raper also had the other score of the day when he caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Lewis. Wallace Miles, who has led the Aggies in receiving the last three seasons, had five receptions.

"We had some dropped balls, some bad throws and some penalties," said Broadway. "Those are things we have to get cleaned up, but that is to be expected this time of year. We have a new staff and they're learning a new system. We have a good group of kids, and a good foundation to build from. We have to continue to coach them and coach them well."

Broadway: A&T still comes up a bit short

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- It's easy to spot Rod Broadway on the practice field. Look for the big guy. N.C. A&T's new head coach, a 6-foot-4 former All-ACC defensive lineman, leads an undersized, shorthanded group into the annual Blue-Gold spring football game today at Aggie Stadium.

Broadway, who turns 56 today, towers over most of his players. And he'd rather not.

"Defensively, we're really little. I think there's one kid on the defense who's taller than me," Broadway said. "We're playing with 5-7 corners and 5-10 linebackers and 5-11 defensive tackles. Everybody else is playing with 6-4, 300-pound guys up front. One of our best defensive linemen weighs 230, so we're overmatched right now in a lot of areas."

Overmatched or not, Broadway and the all-new coaching staff plan to move forward with the existing team.

Public debut for A&T's new coach and new system

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The N.C. A&T football team wraps up spring practice with its annual Blue-Gold game at 1 p.m. Saturday. And the team, like Aggie Stadium itself, remains a work in progress. Admission to the game is free. Tailgating will be allowed, but it will be restricted to the A4 parking lot behind the scoreboard because of ongoing construction on the front side of Aggie Stadium.

The press box has been torn down, and a new two-level structure should be ready by Aug. 15. But will the Aggies be ready?

A whole new coaching staff led by Rod Broadway has worked with just 54 players this spring. They'll hold their 14th practice today, with the spring game serving as the 15th and final allowed practice.

North Carolina A&T Beats Morgan State In MEAC Conference Matchup

Greensboro, N.C. - Thomas Coleman scored 21 points and Marc Hill sank six free throws in the final minute as North Carolina A&T beat Morgan State 68-60 Monday night.

The victory by the Aggies (15-15, 9-6 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) ended a three-year reign by the Bears (15-12, 10-5) as conference regular-season champions, giving Bethune-Cookman the No. 1 tournament seed.

North Carolina A&T led 46-34, in the second half, but after Morgan State cut it to six points, 60-54, Hill missed two free throws for the Aggies. A 3-pointer by the Bears' Aric Brooks made it 60-57 with 1:39 left.

Coleman has A&T cooking

GREENSBORO — Before stepping onto the Corbett Center floor for the last time, Thomas Coleman sat an extra minute at his locker. As the N.C. A&T center paused to reflect, soon the only two people who remained were the senior and the coach who recruited him.

Coleman finally broke the silence. "He said, 'Coach, I remember you sitting at my kitchen table,' " A&T coach Jerry Eaves said, referencing Coleman's recruitment. "We both just kind of looked at each other and laughed."

Aggies Lose Battle For No. 2

GREENSBORO - No matter what problem the North Carolina A&T women's basketball team presented to Morgan State Monday evening, the Bears had the same two solutions throughout. Morgan State frustrated the Aggies with efficiency from the free throw line and 3-point arc. As a result, the Bears won the battle for the No. 2 seed in the MEAC Tournament with a 74-69 win at Corbett Sports Center.

The Bears hit 11 3-pointers and made 23 of 25 free throws. Erin Hawkins led the way with 17 points on 5-for-10 shooting from 3-point range. Brittany Dodson added 15 points on 9-for-10 shooting at the line.

In her final game at Corbett Sports Center, senior Jaleesa Sams finished with 23 points and six rebounds.

"Morgan State did what they're supposed to do, they hit 3-pointers and hit free throws," said N.C. A&T head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs. "They executed brilliantly tonight."

The Aggies trailed by as many as 14 in the second half. But a Sams 3-pointer tied the game at 56 with 4:20 remaining. The Bears responded by going on a 9-2 run that included a 6-for-6 stretch at the free throw line and a 3-point shot by Brittany Noel that gave the Bears a 65-58 lead with 1:26 to play.

N.C. A&T got the lead down to three points four times within the last 40 seconds of the game. But the Bears converted 7 of 8 free throws to put the Aggies away.

The Bears (16-12, 10-5) secured the No. 2 seed with the win. The loss for the Aggies (14-13, 9-6) was costly. They slip into a third-place tie with Howard. The two teams split this season, but Howard owns the tiebreaker over the Aggies because its margin of victory was greater. Therefore, the Aggies need a Howard loss to secure the third seed.

A&T Aggies Open Baseball Season Against Campbell

CollegeBaseballInsider.com recently released its 2011 Players to Watch in the MEAC List, and the North Carolina A&T baseball team was well represented.

The Aggies start the 2011 season Friday afternoon at 1 against Campbell University from War Memorial Stadium. The program is coming off of one of its best seasons ever. N.C. A&T (31-26, 15-3) won 30-plus games for the first time in school history, and set a school record for conference wins. In the process, head coach Keith Shumate advanced the Aggies to their fourth MEAC Championship Game in six years.

Baseball insiders are recognizing the outstanding job Shumate is doing with the Aggies program. CollegeBaseballInsider.com named him the best "in-game" coach in the MEAC. Other Aggies receiving top honors included junior second-baseman Marquis Riley. He was recognized as the toughest hitter in the conference to strikeout. Riley struck out only five times last season, second fewest in the nation.

Junior outfielder Xavier Macklin, who has mostly played in left field during his career, was voted as the best defensive outfielder in the league. The acknowledgement shows that he is an all-around outstanding player. Macklin was voted as one of the three best pure hitters in the conference as well as being named as one of the three best power threats.

Junior Esterlin Paulino closed out the honors for N.C. A&T. He was voted as one of the three best starting pitchers. Paulino was the 2010 MEAC Pitcher of the Year after posting a 9-2 record and a league-best 3.38 ERA.

The Aggies are picked to finish second in the MEAC behind perennial champion Bethune-Cookman. Riley, Macklin and Paulino made the MEAC's preseason all-conference team. Paulino was predicted to win MEAC Pitcher of the Year. The Aggies also return leading hitter and 2010 MEAC Rookie of the Year Kelvin Freeman.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Chancellor Harold L. Martin has announced the appointment of Earl Hilton as the new North Carolina A&T intercollegiate director of athletics.

"For the last three months, Mr. Hilton has served as interim athletics director," said Martin. "During this time, we have had the opportunity to examine his work ethic and professional practices, and we have been impressed with both his managerial and interpersonal skills. We are anticipating significant changes and growth in our athletics programs under Earl's leadership."

Hilton is no stranger to N.C. A&T. He worked as the department's finance, compliance and personnel director from 2000-02. Before coming to N.C. A&T, Hilton worked as Buffalo State's NCAA compliance director from 1997-2000. He also handled the departmental budget and served as the recreational and intramural supervisor. In 1993, he became an academic counselor at Texas Tech.

Broadway Named North Carolina A&T Football Coach

North Carolina A&T Head Coach Rod Broadway
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Director of Athletics Earl Hilton has announced the appointment of Rod Broadway to become North Carolina A&T's new football coach. Broadway will become the school's 18th head football coach.

"Mr. Broadway's record speaks for itself," said Hilton. "We are very excited with the new turn North Carolina A&T football took today. We are looking forward to Mr. Broadway restoring the winning tradition our fans have become so accustomed to having."

Broadway comes to N.C. A&T with impressive credentials. He spent four years as the head coach of N.C. Central. After leaving the Eagles' program he had a four-year stay at Grambling State University. Between those two universities, he compiled a combined record of 68-23, .750 winning percentage.

"I'm excited about coming to N.C. A&T," said Broadway. "Their tradition and fan support is second to none. I'm looking forward to the challenge that lies before us. If everything I hear about Aggie Pride is true, we're going to win and win big here."

Broadway became the head coach at Grambling in 2007. In only his second year at the helm, he led the Tigers to an 11-2 record and the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship. His Grambling teams were 3-1 against archrival Southern. He posted a 35-12 record at Grambling.

At N.C. Central, Broadway won two CIAA Championships, made two NCAA Division II playoff appearances and won 75 percent of his games. He won a Black College National Championship at Grambling and NCCU.

Prior to his tenure at NCCU, Broadway honed his skills on the NCAA football's highest level as the defensive line coach at the University of North Carolina (2001-02), University of Florida (1995-00), Duke University (1981-94) and East Carolina University (1979-80).

As an assistant coach at North Carolina, Broadway helped the Tar Heels to a No. 15 national ranking in total defense and an appearance in the Peach Bowl.

While at Florida, he served as a member of Steve Spurrier's staff and helped the Gators attain four SEC Championships, six bowl appearances and one national championship in 1996.

Broadway's defensive units at Florida led the SEC in sacks from 1996-99 with the 1997 team setting a school record for rush defense with 70.7 yards per game.

A 1977 graduate of the University of North Carolina, Broadway played on the defensive line from 1974-77 and helped lead UNC to the 1974 Sun Bowl and the 1977 Liberty Bowl. Among the honors he earned were the team's "Outstanding Freshman" in 1974 and "Most Outstanding Senior" along with All-ACC honors in 1977.

Savannah State and North Carolina A&T Football to play at Appalachian State

Boone, N.C.  - Six home games, including three in September, and a season-opening contest versus one of college football’s most powerful programs highlights Appalachian State University’s 2011 football schedule, which was announced by ASU director of athletics Charlie Cobb on Monday.

Appalachian opens the 2011 campaign at Virginia Tech. The season-opening matchup pits two of only three NCAA Division I programs that have won at least 10 games each of the last six years (Ohio State is the third). Despite being separated by less than 150 miles, the Mountaineers and Hokies are squaring off for only the fourth time ever and the first time since 1982.

Virginia Tech won each of the three previous meetings between the programs, all of which took place at VT’s Lane Stadium in a four-year span from 1979-82 (the teams did not meet in 1980). The Mountaineers are 7-27-1 all-time against current members of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Following the opener at Virginia Tech, ASU settles in for a very rare string of three-consecutive home games, beginning with the home opener on Sept. 10 versus North Carolina A&T, followed by a Sept. 17 date against another Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe in Savannah State and the Sept. 24 Southern Conference opener versus Chattanooga.

The three-consecutive games at Kidd Brewer Stadium, where ASU has led FCS in regular-season attendance for each of the past four years, mark only the third time in Appalachian’s 82-year football history that the Mountaineers will play regular-season home games on three-straight Saturdays (the Apps also played at home on three-consecutive weekends in Sept. 1957 and Sept. 1981).

WSSU's Maynor turns down offer from North Carolina A&T

Connell Maynor of Winston-Salem State has turned down an offer to be the next football coach at N.C. A&T.

That all changed on Friday when Rod Broadway, the coach at Grambling State, turned down an offer from A&T.  Maynor was asked back to campus at A&T on Friday afternoon and was offered the job.

"They offered it to me and, after considering it, I had to say no," said Maynor, 42, who is a 1995 graduate of N.C. A&T, where he was an All-MEAC quarterback. "The timing just wasn't right and in the best interest of myself and my family, I couldn't take the job."

UPDATE: I talked to coach Broadway earlier today. He said the "deal isn't done yet." Stay tuned.

According to reliable sources, Grambling State football coach Rod Broadway is the new coach at N.C. A&T.  Broadway led the Tigers to a black college national championship and several SWAC championships.

Interestingly, his name is already off the roster on the Grambling website. Before Grambling, Broadway led N.C. Central to back-to-back CIAA titles and a black college national title. He and current NCCU coach Henry Frazier had a nice rivalry going in the SWAC and that is sure to continue now that both are together again in the MEAC.
