Paine's Tim Duncan already hard at work

Augusta, GA - When Tim Duncan officially started at Paine, he planned to take 90 days to observe and then take action. President George Bradley had other plans for his new athletic director, telling him he soon wanted a strategic plan in place. Shortly after his May 9 start date, Duncan assembled a five-part plan. That’s been just the start for Duncan, who’s made several other major changes for the athletic department.

“It’s been extremely busy,” Duncan said. “But it’s been very good.”

The former UNC-Wilmington associate athletic director and director of major gifts, Duncan has been working to become more visible in the Augusta community. He’s also spoken to several alumni groups throughout the state.

“Paine College has been a well-kept secret,” Duncan said. “I want people to know the good things we’re doing.” He established a five-part plan, which includes academic excellence, athletic excellence, compliance, external operations and student well-being.

NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field All-America Recipients Named

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announces the 172 men and 153 women that earned USTFCCCA All-America distinctions for the 2011 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field season. A total of 416 awards will be given as a result of performances at the past weekend’s NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Turlock, California.

Just as the indoor season, Abilene Christian’s men and Grand Valley State’s women won NCAA team titles. Both squads were the top-ranked team by the USTFCCCA heading into the championships and ACU’s men went wire-to-wire as the nation’s No. 1 team throughout the outdoor season.

NCAA TEAM FINISHES

Abilene Christian scored 68 points for the team victory to extend their NCAA-record to 19 national outdoor team crowns. ACU has won the national crown in eight of the last ten years. The Wildcats claimed individual national titles with Desmond Jackson (200 meters), Amos Sang (10,000 meters), and Nick Jones (discus). Jones also placed second in the shot put and was the team’s top scorer with 18 points.

Adams State finished as the men’s runners-up with 55 points and national titles from Andrew Graham (1500 meters) and Luke Cragg (5000 meters). Lincoln (Mo.) placed third with 51 and Emporia State, with 43 points, earned fourth for their first “trophy” finish and highest national-team finish in school history (seventh, 1996).

Grand Valley State’s women scored 82½ points for the NCAA crown, holding off late-charging Lincoln (Mo.) who finished second with 68. For GVSU, it was their first outdoor crown, and, combined with national titles in cross country and indoor track & field, the school earned an academic-year “triple crown”. GVSU junior Lauren Buresh won a national crown in the shot put and Liz Murphy took first with the hammer throw.

For second-place Lincoln, junior Judith Riley won the 100 meters and led off the Blue Tigers’ 4×100 national-champ relay. Sophomore Yanique Haye won top honors in the 400 hurdles. Adams State placed third with 51 points as Indira Spence carried three top-three finishes, scoring 22 points in the 100, 200, and 100 hurdles. Cassie Mitchell won the steeplechase crown for the Grizzlies. With a national crown in the 100 hurdles, Shermaine Williams led Johnson C. Smith to a fourth-place showing.

REPEAT CHAMPIONS

Johnson C. Smith’s Shermaine Williams was the first to three-peat in the 100 hurdles since Abilene Christian’s Delloreen Ennis-London won four straight from 1996 to 1999. And, Fort Valley State’s Antionette Oglesby won a third-straight NCAA championship in the women’s triple jump. Neely Spence of Shippensburg won a third-straight crown in the 5000-meter run, becoming the first in D-II outdoor history to do so.

Kimour Bruce for Lincoln (Mo.) won his second-straight title in the 100-meter dash. Amos Sang won a second-straight crown in the men’s 10,000 meters. In the men’s pole vault, Western Washington’s Ryan Brown captured a second-straight win. And, Ashland’s Ryan Loughney won the men’s hammer and UC San Diego’s Nick Howe won the men’s javelin for the second year in a row.

USTFCCCA ALL-AMERICA HONORS

ohnson C. Smith’s Leford Green led all men in earning four USTFCCCA All-America certificates from the 2011 outdoor track & field season. Green was the national champ in the 400 meters, sixth in the 400 hurdles, and was a member of the winning 4×400 relay and as part of the fifth-place 4×100 relay.

Lincoln (Mo.) led all men’s teams with 15 All-America certificates, followed by Saint Augustine’s (13), Abilene Christian (13), and Johnson C. Smith (12). Lincoln also had the most women’s certificates with 19, followed by Grand Valley State (16), Saint Augustine’s (10), and Adams State (9).

The schools of the MIAA had the most certificates among all conferences with 39 men’s and 40 women’s. The Lone Star Conference had the second-most on the men’s side, followed by the CIAA (26), the RMAC (26), and the GLIAC (24). The GLIAC was second in the women’s category with 30, followed by the RMAC (23), the CCAA (20), and the CIAA (19).

To earn USTFCCCA All-America honors, athletes must have scored any portion of a team point at the NCAA Championships. USTFCCCA membership by a program is required to earn All-America awards.

Stillman headed to NCAA Division II South Regional

TUSCALOOSA, AL | The Stillman College baseball team earned an automatic bid into the 2011 NCAA Division II Baseball Tournament by winning the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament championship two weeks ago.

On Sunday, the Tigers were officially invited to the NCAA championship party. The tournament is comprised of 48 teams at eight regional sites. The South Regional consists of eight teams and the West Regional consists of four teams. The six-team regionals are the Atlantic, East, Central, Midwest, Southeast and South Central.

Stillman (26-17) will play in the NCAA Division II South Regional, which begins Thursday at Jim Spooner Field on the University of West Florida campus in Pensacola. The winner will advance to the NCAA Division II World Series in Cary, N.C., on May 29.

“We are very excited,” Stillman head coach Donny Crawford said. “I am just ready...

ASU stars shine at annual Alice Coachman meet

ALBANY, GA — Brittany Carter found herself all alone as she approached the starting line Saturday for the 800-meter run.  “I didn’t believe it,” said the Albany State sophomore, who waited and hoped for another runner to step onto the track. “I was the only one on paper (scheduled to run in the 800), but I thought somebody else was going to run.”

But there she stood — all by herself on ASU’s home track during the 19th annual Alice Coachman Track & Field Invitational. She was just one of several athletes who were on the cusp of qualifying for the Division II National Championships. And Saturday’s meet offered those runners a final chance to post qualifying times.

Carter needed a 2:14 to provisionally qualify in the 800, something that becomes tougher to do as a solo runner.  “Usually I have someone to run with and get my first lap time. Usually I practice for a 1:03 first lap, so I kind of knew how to run that by myself,” said Carter, who ran her first lap in 1:04. “The second lap I had a strategy to pick it up at the 300 mark and at the 150 try to finish strong.”

Defending champion ASU Rams open 2011 SIAC tourney today at home

ALBANY, GA — When Albany State junior shortstop William Smalls talks, interim baseball coach Kenyon Conner said his team listens. That was clear during Wednesday afternoon’s practice when Smalls spoke about preparing for this week’s SIAC baseball tournament, which starts today at Paul Eames Park.

“We are ready to play, man,” the SIAC Player of the Year candidate said. “Just like in the military, get your soldiers up and get ready to go to war.”

“War” starts today at 10 a.m. when the No. 6 Rams (25-23 overall, 10-5 SIAC) host No. 3 Tuskegee (16-15, 11-4) in the opener of the eight-team, double-elimination tournament. The Rams, who have won 11 of their last 18 games, hosted and won last year’s SIAC Tournament. Conner said pressure to repeat lingers in the back of his players’ minds.

ASU men’s hoops signs four, aims for big rebound after tough season

ALBANY, GA — Josh Alford, Justin Wilcox, Tray Pearce and Tyrell Johnson. Remember those names. They’re the quartet of players Albany State’s men’s basketball program welcomed with open arms Friday during three separate signing ceremonies as the Rams look to rebuild and move past what happened a year ago when they finished 7-22 and dead last in the SIAC.

“All these guys are winners, from high school to junior college they won,” ASU coach Chris Cameron said. “We went out and tried to get guys who can restore that winning tradition — and I think we’ve done that.”

Restoring the winning tradition starts with Alford, the high-scoring former Worth County star who signed out of high school with Middle Georgia College. Cameron, who said Friday he’d had his eye on Alford from as early as his sophomore year when Alford attended one of ASU’s summer camps, got a chance to see him this past season during MGC’s trip to Albany to face Albany Tech.

Senior powers Morehouse Tigers golf to victory

Olajuwon Ajanaku can finally cut his hair. The Morehouse College senior wanted to wait until he won a tournament, and his three-round total of 8-over-par 224 was more than enough as Ajanaku placed first individually and his team won the SIAC Golf Classic at par-72 Jones Creek Golf Club on Wednesday.

"I've never seen this much hair on my face," Ajanaku said with a smile.

Morehouse had four of the top five scorers as it ended at 69-over-par for a comfortable victory. The victory gave Bill Lewis coach of the year honors as Morehouse won for the third consecutive year. Benedict College came in second at 135-over and Kentucky State grabbed third at 182-over. Paine College was next in fourth place at 226-over and LeMoyne-Owen College rounded out the team scores at 370-over.

KSU Men's Basketball Coach Announces Resignation

FRANKFORT, Ky. – After two years at the helm of Kentucky State University's (KSU) men's basketball program, Head Coach Clarence Moore, Jr. announced today his resignation from the program.

KSU Director of Athletics, Dr. Denisha L. Hendricks also announced that Assistant Coach Antwain Banks will serve as Interim Head Coach for the 2011-12 season. The announcement comes after Moore led the Thorobreds to their first winning season (15-13, 13-11 SIAC) since their 16-13 record under Winston Bennett during the 2000-01 campaign.

“I'm saddened to leave KSU. It was my first opportunity to coach at the collegiate level after coming in as an assistant and then made interim head coach halfway through the season and for the following year, then promoted to head coach this past season,” said Moore. “I'm sad because I've grown here as a coach and have bonded with my team and others on campus. I'm grateful for the opportunity I had here. It's an experience I will never forget or take for granted. I want to thank Dr. Sias, Dr. Hendricks and the entire KSU family for welcoming me and my family here and for giving me such a great opportunity at a young age.”

In two-and-a-half years, Moore amassed a record of 34-42. He also coached six Dean's List student-athletes (Julian Brown, Carlos Carter, John Gaston, Jarrod Gay, William Marsh and Austin Rich) and one student-athlete who scored over 1,000 career points (Tony Johnson). Under Moore's leadership, Johnson was also named to the 2010 SIAC All-Conference Second Team, 2010-11 Preseason All-Conference Second Team, 2010-11 All-Conference First Team and the 2011 SIAC All-Tournament Team.

“We are very sad that Coach Moore is leaving us,” stated KSU Director of Athletics, Dr. Denisha L. Hendricks. “He has done a great job here at KSU. He will be greatly missed, but we are really excited about the opportunity for Coach Moore and his family.”

Moore leaves KSU to assume a senior executive position at Edison Chouest Offshore in New Orleans, La. but is confident in the leadership skills of his assistant coach, Antwain Banks.

ASU women’s track & field captures SIAC Championship

ALBANY, GA — Albany State men’s and women’s track & field coach Kenneth Taylor said he told his team to remember one thing before they headed to the SIAC Track & Field Spring Championships this weekend in Atlanta.

“I told them this last year, and then I reminded them again this year that (in 2010) we just loaned the title to Fort Valley State,” Taylor said Sunday. “And (in 2011) we were gonna get it back.” Promise kept.

The Lady Rams dominated from start to finish, never lost the overall lead and brought the SIAC crown back to Albany on Sunday afternoon, earning Taylor his seventh conference title on the women’s side in eight years since taking over the program in 2003.

The Lady Rams scored 241.5 points, which was more than double the amount scored by second place Fort Valley, which finished with 112 points. Benedict College finished third with 89 points.

Paine College selects school's first full-time Athletic Director

Augusta, GA - When he was contacted six weeks ago for the open athletic director position, Tim Duncan liked what he saw. Paine College President George C. Bradley's 25-year master plan appealed to Duncan, especially the strategic plan for athletics.

Paine named Duncan, the former UNC-Wilmington associate athletic director and director of major gifts, as its new athletic director at a Friday morning news conference at the Yerby House. "We want Paine to be the class of the SIAC," Duncan said of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. "I want to win. I know that takes time and resources. It's my job to provide the resources."

Duncan will become the school's first full-time athletic director. He will start May 9 with a 90-day plan that includes reviewing personnel and policies, as well as coming up with ways to build new revenue streams.

Duncan Accepts A.D. Post at Paine

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Tim Duncan, who headed up UNCW's Seahawk Club for two years before taking over the athletic department's major gifts program in February, has been named Director of Athletics at Paine College.

Duncan was introduced during a press conference on Friday at the Augusta, Ga., institution. Paine is an NCAA Division II member that competes in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). The Lions sponsor 10 sports in men and women's basketball, men's and women's track and field, men's and women's cross country, men's golf, baseball, softball, and women's volleyball

"My family and I have enjoyed our two years at UNCW," said Duncan. "The Wilmington community holds a very dear place in our hearts and it was going to take a very special opportunity for us to leave the Seahawk family.

"The chance to work with Paine College president Dr. (George C.) Bradley, a former college student-athlete, and become the first non-coach athletic director was a unique enough combination to intrigue Lisa and I to take advantage of this opportunity.

"I would like to thank former Director of Athletics Kelly Mehrtens for hiring me and introducing me to the Wilmington community. I would also like to thank Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo, Max Allen and Jimmy Bass for supporting me during this process. Finally, I want to thank the faculty/staff, the Seahawk Club Board of Directors and all of the Seahawk fans who have been extremely kind to my family and me. We plan to continue to visit Wilmington for family vacations in the years to come."

Duncan began his association with the program in the spring of 2009 as Associate Athletic Director for Development and Executive Director of the UNCW Student Aid Association (Seahawk Club) and was appointed Associate A.D. for Major Gifts in February.

In his position with the Seahawk Club, Duncan increased unrestricted giving by 20 percent and oversaw the development of "Dancing with the Wilmington Stars," the largest athletics fundraiser in the program's history.

"I've only worked with Tim for a short time, but he's been very helpful in my transition here at UNCW," said Bass. "Tim has prepared himself well for this new challenge and we certainly wish Tim, Lisa, and their family the very best in this next stage of his career."

Duncan previously served as Director of the M Club at the University of Memphis, where he helped the Tigers increase their revenue by 35 percent and membership by 40 percent over his first year. He also solicited major gifts from donors and former student-athletes, including the largest single gift ($1 million) for naming rights to the school's Athletic Hall of Fame.

In addition, he spearheaded the strategic planning, direction and management for the school's former letter winners. He was an integral part of UM's annual athletic fundraising and major gifts programs.

Prior to his appointment at Memphis, Duncan was a managing partner in PRStore, a marketing firm in Memphis. He developed strategies for small business owners and managed store operations and personnel.

The Memphis native began his career path as a public relations coordinator for Russell Corporation in Midland, Ga., in 1996. He assisted in managing sponsorships for the National Football League, Major League Baseball and the NCAA, and coordinated various other promotional programs for two years.

From 1998-2003, Duncan worked as an assistant marketing manager and marketing manager at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in Winston-Salem, N.C. He assisted in managing the execution of a $70 million event marketing program initially and later managed the start-up of a $13 million program for one of the company's brands. He also coordinated 51 high-profile events for R.J. Reynolds, including NASCAR Winston Cup and NHRA Drag Racing.

In 2003, Duncan founded Infrared Marketing, LLC, to develop strategies for Fortune 500 companies who wanted to accomplish their marketing objectives.

Duncan is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD) and the National Letterwinners Association (NLWA).

He earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing at Memphis in 1992 and completed his Master of Science Degree in Sports Administration at Grambling State in 1997.

Duncan played four years on the Memphis men's basketball team and helped the Tigers and former coach Larry Finch reach the NCAA's Elite Eight during his senior year in 1992.

ASU baseball finishes off series with Morehouse with 14-10 win

ALBANY, GA — Fresh off a doubleheader sweep of Morehouse on Saturday, the Albany State baseball team made it 3-for-3 when it won a slugfest, 14-10, in the series finale Sunday. The Rams moved to 21-16 overall and 8-1 in the SIAC one year after winning the conference title.

Dallas Neloms led the way, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI, while posting two hits each were Corbin Williams (two runs scored, RBI), former Westover star Jacob Campbell (two runs scored, RBI), Brandon Small (two runs scored, RBI) and Desmond Towns (three runs scored, two RBI).

ASU mashes Morehouse in twin bill sweep, moves to 7-1 in SIAC

ALBANY, GA — Talk about laying it on thick. That’s what Albany State’s baseball team did to Morehouse College in both games of Saturday’s doubleheader. The Maroon Tigers (10-19 overall, 1-7 SIAC) did not stand a chance as they tried the bounce back from a 20-7 thumping in Game 1, only to fall in similar fashion by a final of 12-2 in the night cap.

“I thought we came into the second game with a little more sense of urgency — (we) jumped right on them,” said ASU interim coach Kenyan Conner, whose team improved to 20-16 overall and 7-1 in the SIAC. “Anytime you don’t have a lot of walks and (play) good defense then you will always give yourself a chance to win.

But the effort by the Rams, who won the SIAC title last season under longtime coach Edward Taylor before Taylor left and Conner took over, on the defensive side of the ball was just one reason for their dominance in this meeting as their bats got hot early — and stayed that way for the entire afternoon.

Albany State: Spring In Their Step

ALBANY, GA — How good are these guys?

Really, just how much better can Albany State’s football team be next fall? It’s seems like it was 15 minutes ago when the Rams were making history, winning the SIAC and marching deep into the Division II playoffs in a season no one in the Good Life City will soon forget.

But could they be better? They sure looked like it Friday night during the annual Blue and Gold scrimmage spring game at the ASU Coliseum, where they made a little April history. That’s what quarterbacks coach Uyl Joyner called it after watching the offense (the Gold) beat the defense (the Blue), 37-19.

“It’s about time,’’ said Joyner, who smiled when he said it. “Defense always rules at Albany State. But the offense finally won. It’s history!’’

A Look Back: The day FAMU's Bob Hayes came home an Olympic champion

Jacksonville, FL -  I can remember it as if it were yesterday.

Joe Livingston, who did public relations for the city, came into the newsroom on the fourth floor of The Florida Times-Union building at 400 W. Adams St. with a release that said in two hours, the city parks and recreation department along with the Florida A&M band would stage a parade downtown to welcome home Bob Hayes.

The Matthew Gilbert High School and Florida A&M football and track athlete was to be welcomed home from the 1964 Summer Olympics in Japan, where he won two gold medals.

Executive Editor John S. Walters happened to be in his office and I took Livingston's release in to him. After glancing at it, Walters told me to put it in the Star Edition's mailbox. The Times-Union started the Star Edition on Jan. 1, 1950, to report on "news for and about the colored people." It was distributed to the city's African-American readers.

USA wins the 4 x 100m relay at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics in a then World Record time of 39.06 seconds. The improbable victory was made possible by the phenomenally swift anchor leg run by Robert Lee "Bullet Bob" Hayes (#702).  His leg was quite possibly the fastest ever (8.50 seconds hand timed) according to many pundits. This relay race was Hayes' last race as a track and field athlete, as he permanently switched to NFL football (Dallas Cowboys) after the 64' Olympic games.

2011 KSU Thorobreds Football Schedule Highlighted by Conference Clash in Indianapolis

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky State University's Director of Athletics, Dr. Denisha L. Hendricks, has announced the 2011 Thorobred Football schedule. In a campaign that opens against rival Central State University on September 4 in the Dayton Classic, this year's schedule boasts five home games, three non-conference matchups and a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference battle in one of the oldest HBCU classics.

“We are very excited about the upcoming football season and the start of the SIAC East-West Division setup,” said Hendricks.

After opening the season on the road, the Thorobreds return home to take on Lincoln University (PA) on September 10 and then their first West Division game against Stillman College on September 17. On September 24 KSU travels to Owensboro, Ky. to play their final non-conference game of the season against Kentucky Wesleyan.

The 2011 season is highlighted by KSU's matchup against conference foe Albany State in the 2011 Circle City Classic at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Following their appearance in the Circle City Classic, the Thorobreds return to Frankfort for a homecoming, conference battle against Fort Valley State. Last year the Breds fell 12-14 to the Wildcats on Senior Day.

“This year's schedule is great for fans to witness Thorobred football on our home turf,” said Head Coach Wayne Dickens, who enters his third season as head coach at KSU. “It's always great to play in front of the home crowd and the new SIAC divisional format allows us to play more home games and not have to travel as far for away games.”

The remainder of the season alternates home and away games with KSU traveling to Miles College on October 15, returning home to play Tuskegee on October 22 and then hitting the road again on October 29 to battle Lane College. The Breds conclude the regular season with a home game against Morehouse College on November 5.

The Thorobreds wrapped up the 2010 season with a record of 3-8 overall and 2-7 in the SIAC, but they are focused on building upon their strong recruiting class. “We had a successful recruiting season and now it is time to see the fruits of our labor,” said Dickens. “We are one team, with one vision and that's to win, first our division and then the conference championship.”

Spring is in the air: Blue vs. Gold scrimmage tonight

ALBANY, GA — Steaks or hot dogs? That’s what’s on the line tonight when Albany State holds its annual Blue and Gold scrimmage spring football game.

The game starts at 6 p.m. and tickets are $10 for anyone who wants to get a glimpse of what the 2011 Rams are going to look like next fall. The game is sponsored by the 100 Black Men of Albany, who will have free T-Shirts for fans who arrive early for the game.

Everybody at ASU should be eating steak after the season the Rams produced last fall when they won the SIAC title and advanced deep into the Division II playoffs. By the time it was over ASU had been named 2010 SBN Black College national champions.

It’s that memorable season that has ignited spring practice, and the progress and promise will both be on the field at the ASU Coliseum, where the rules are simple: Winners eat steak, losers get hot dogs.

Ozark stadium to host its first four-year college baseball game

OZARK, AL – Several baseball fans and players from Tuscaloosa and Albany, Ga., are expected to be in Ozark this weekend for the city’s first baseball game with four-year, Division 2 college players.

Baseball teams from Stillman College in Tuscaloosa and Albany State University are playing a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Eagle Stadium at 7 p.m. Friday and will have a double-header at 1 p.m. Saturday.
