ANN ARBOR, Michigan -- Given the time of year, a decisive win against a lowly opponent should be a normal course for No. 20 Michigan.
After a challenging nonconference schedule the past three weeks, that's why coach John Beilein scheduled a game against lowly Arkansas Pine Bluff, to give his starters a breather and his bench a chance.
Unfortunately his team has struggled to put away some smaller-school opponents and, though the Wolverines finished off the Golden Lions, 63-50, on Tuesday night at Crisler Arena, no one was thrilled with the way they got to the finish line after holding a 25-point lead with 13 minutes remaining.
Beilein talked to the team, stressing the missed opportunity to get some of their bench players minutes, and co-captain Zack Novak made his case as well.
LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas-Pine Bluff has been invited to play in the 2011 Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off, one of the tournaments that serves as a kickoff to the college basketball season.
The Golden Lions will take on Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla. in the Midwest Region of the bracket. The Cowboys are a no.2-seed against the unseeded Golden Lions.
Oral Roberts and Texas-San Antonio round out the four-team pod in Stillwater. Dates and times will be determined in the coming weeks.
The 14-team field also includes Virginia Tech, George Mason and Stanford. The four teams to advance out of their regionals will play at Madison Square Garden in New York City November 23-25.
PINE BLUFF, Ark. — After losing the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, the Southern baseball team turned to junior right-hander Brian Foster with a chance to win the series. Foster, who won his first start of the season at Jackson State eight days earlier, responded.
Foster got Southern through seven innings in Saturday’s second game, then made way for closer Cody Hall in a 9-2 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff to take the three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference series. The win, combined with a pair of Grambling losses at Prairie View, gave Southern the Western Division championship.
Foster, who improved to 2-0 since moving from the bullpen to the starting rotation, helped the Jaguars get back on track after a 10-6 loss to the Golden Lions in Saturday’s first game.
PINE BLUFF, Ark. — The Southern baseball team didn’t get a sparkling effort from its pitching staff Friday. But the Jaguars got enough of what they needed — from reliever Daniel Garcia, from its solid defense and from its suddenly potent offense.
In the opener of a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division series, Southern erupted for 14 runs in the first four innings and held off Arkansas-Pine Bluff for a 15-10 victory. It was the first time the Jaguars scored 15 or more runs since March 12, when they opened a three-game road series at Prairie View with a 17-5 win.
It was also Southern’s first game with 10 or more runs since March 27, when the team defeated UAPB 10-7 to complete a three-game sweep in Baton Rouge. Frazier Hall, Wilmy Marrero and B.J. Rowry, the Nos. 3-5 hitters, combined to go 8-for-15 with seven RBIs.
PINE BLUFF, Ark. (KTHV) -- Raymond Webber is one of two(2) players to finish a season in the Southwest Athletic Conference(SWAC) with 100 or more passes. The other player was Jerry Rice.
Like many football players, Webber hopes to hear his name called at some point in the 2011 NFL draft. Webber says playing under Monte Coleman has prepared him for the NFL. He understands the NFL Lingo thanks to the pro style offense at UAPB.
He's visited 8 teams leading up to the draft and hopes one of those will become his new home soon. He sat down with Today's THV and talked about his visits and his approach to the pro game.
Call him a late bloomer, or a classic case of someone who slipped through the cracks. But St. Louisan Raymond Webber, a wide receiver from Arkansas-Pine Bluff, is a secret no more to NFL teams.
Webber, who finished his high school career at Miller Career Academy in the PHL, is in the midst of a whirlwind tour of the NFL. He already has visited Seattle, San Francisco, San Diego, and Green Bay. Next week, he tours Florida with pre-draft visits to Tampa Bay, Jacksonville and Miami.
He also had a visit and a private workout for his hometown team, the Rams, at the end of March. So when did Webber realize he was an NFL prospect?
"I really didn't know," Webber said. "It's all overwhelming. We have a top prospect in our ‘d-tackle' _ Ibraham Abdulai. During the season a lot of scouts were coming to scout him, and I was just riding his coattails, hoping to get seen, hoping to just talk to a scout to give me more motivation."
Webber participated in two lesser known postseason all-star games: the Russell Athletic HBCU All-Star Bowl in Atlanta on Dec. 18; and the inaugural Eastham Energy All-Star Game Jan. 23 in Tempe, Ariz. But he didn't get invited to the NFL scouting combine, and didn't realize there was this kind of interest in him until about a month ago.

The Seahawks have also scheduled a visit with 6-2, 218 lb. Arkansas-Pine Bluff WR Raymond Webber. Webber has about 4.5 speed and solid hands - he caught 101 passes for 1,429 yards and 10 TDs this last season for Arkansas-Pine Bluff. His catch and yardage total are truly ridiculous numbers considering the amount of games they play at the college level, and not surprisingly both were tops in the FCS. That's 129.91 yards per game. Not bad. Only three times has a receiver in the SWAC caught 100 balls in a season, and the other two were Jerry Rice in two different seasons. GARLAND, TX — Top-seeded Texas Southern needed clutch free throws at the end to hold off an upset bid by Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 50-45, in Wednesday’s opening round of the Farmers Insurance SWAC Tournament at the Special Events Center. SWAC Player of the Year Travele Jones scored 19 for Texas Southern, but the win wasn’t secure until teammate Justin Ray hit two free throws with 2.5 seconds left.
Arkansas Pine Bluff (7-24), the No. 8 seed, had lost both regular-season meetings with Texas Southern. UAPB led by five, 42-37, with 6:10 to play after a three-pointer by Allen Smith. But UAPB went nearly six minutes without scoring while Texas Southern chipped away.
GARLAND, TX — Texas Southern survived its first challenge at the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament. The challenge, however, proved to be much bigger than many might have initially thought. The top-seeded Tigers rallied from a five-point deficit late in the second half to stall an upset bid from No. 8 seed Arkansas-Pine Bluff and escape with a 50-45 victory in Wednesday night's first-round matchup at the Special Events Center.
TSU (19-11) advances to the SWAC semifinals, where it'll face the winner of today's matchup between fourth-seeded Alabama State and fifth-seeded Alabama A&M. The Tigers' semifinal will be played at 8 p.m. Friday.
PINE BLUFF, Ark.- The University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff football program has announced the addition of 13 student-athletes who have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Golden Lions.
"We are elated to be the position to bring in a list of several talented players that we feel can come in and make immediate impacts within our football program," said UAPB Head Coach Monte Coleman.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff expects to continue to receive additional letters of intent over the upcoming days. Today marked the official National Signing Day for prepsters across the country. For the Golden Lions coaching staff It was a day that was greeted with much optimism for the near future.
"Are coaches were extremely diligent in searching for the best possible student-athletes to bring into our program to address our needs both offensively and defensively. This signing class while not extremely large in numbers, is very rich with quality student-athletes that should be able to be productive in the systems we have in place on both sides of the ball."
Arkansas-Pine Bluff will open the season on September 3rd against Langston University. The 2011 Golden Lions football schedule is set to be released later this week.

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (KTHV) -- News out of Pine Bluff Thursday is linebackers coach Vernon Dean has been terminated.
Pine Bluff police pulled over UAPB linebacker coach Vernon Dean on January 11 around 11- p.m. for turning without a signal and an improper turn.
According to the police report, officers searched Dean's car and found what tested positive to be crack cocaine in the vehicle.
Dean arrived at Pine Bluff in 2010 after spending the 2009 season at Fort Valley State where he coached outside linebackers. The Houston, Texas native spent seven seasons in the NFL tallying 22 interceptions and winning two Super Bowls with the Washington Redskins.
Dean NFL career ended in 1988 with the Seattle Seahawks. Wellington Vernon Dean played college football at San Diego State University and was drafted in the second round of the 1982 NFL Draft.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff wide receiver Raymond Webber was named AFCA Football Championship Subdivision first-team All-American team on Tuesday. Webber, a senior who caught 101 passes for 1,429 yards and 10 touchdowns this season, was the first UAPB player to be named a first-team FCS All-American since the school moved from NAIA in 1997.
He was the only member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference named to this year’s team.

AUBURN, AL -- Maybe some of the euphoria surrounding Auburn's SEC championship in football has rubbed off on the men's basketball team.
The Tigers survived a scare to beat winless Arkansas-Pine Bluff 76-72 Sunday in front of several hundred fans at a largely empty Auburn Arena. In a season that is likely to be full of indignities for Auburn (3-4), Sunday's game nearly became the most embarrassing.
The Golden Lions (0-7), a SWAC team that typically starts its season on an impossible non-conference barnstorming tour, had lost their first six games by an average margin of 26 points but led Auburn by seven late in the second half.
AUBURN -- Auburn basketball coach Tony Barbee was still hoarse from cheering the Tigers' football team to victory a day earlier in Atlanta, so he shrugged off the sparse crowd Sunday afternoon at Auburn Arena. "It is what it is," he said. "Believe me, I'm caught up in the football hype, too."

HOUSTON — It was an emotional night for Texas Southern University head football coach Johnnie Cole and his players following their 20-13 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday, Nov. 20 at Delmar Stadium. TSU clinched the program's first Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Western Division title and now advances to the SWAC championship game in Birmingham, Ala., on Dec. 11.
The Texas Southern Tigers, who recorded their seventh straight victory, will now compete for their first SWAC title in over 40 years.

Texas Southern running back Marcus Wright probably wasn’t surprised at the defense Arkansas-Pine Bluff threw at him in Saturday’s regular-season finale.
The Golden Lions routinely stacked eight or nine defenders in the box, knowing full well that TSU would primarily run the ball. It was a somewhat risky move, but Arkansas-Pine Bluff was left with few options to keep Wright and his backfield mates from running wild at Delmar Stadium. It didn’t work.

Texas Southern defensive coordinator Kevin Ramsey has a résumé that surpasses his Southwestern Athletic Conference counterparts.
Ramsey collected college coaching stints at Tennessee, Georgia, West Virginia, Northwestern, Kansas State and Arizona State. He had a stop in the NFL as the Arizona Cardinals’ secondary coach from 2001-03. He helped coach West Virginia to a Big East championship in 1993 and helped Tennessee win Southeastern Conference titles in 1997 and 1998 and a national championship after the 1998 season.

Texas Southern University running back Marcus Wright (Dunbar) is one win from playing for the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship. It’s quite a bounce-back story considering Wright appeared in just four games last season as a sophomore mainly due to a suspension for violating a team rule. “It taught me a lot about responsibility,” Wright said by phone this week from the campus in Houston. “You’ve just got to handle your business.”

PINE BLUFF, ARK. — Rushing off the field following a convincing victory, a group of Jackson State assistant coaches pointed at a reporter and screamed: "We won this one," they said, "for Big Coach!"
With coach Rick Comegy absent from the sideline, Jackson State scored five unanswered touchdowns in the second half to rout Arkansas-Pine Bluff 52-30 Saturday, winning its first true road match of the season. Said running back Alfred Moreland: "It was all for Coach Comegy."
As sweet as the victory was, the Tigers still fell short of their ultimate goal - the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game - when Alabama State beat Southern University later Saturday.
PINE BLUFF, ARK. — Donavan Robinson had some making up to do. And Saturday, he did it. The JSU defensive end had nine tackles, two sacks and four tackles for loss in Jackson State's 52-30 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, trying his best to wash away lingering thoughts of last week's flag that sealed the Tigers' loss at Alabama State. Jalil Johnson and Jackson State's secondary tried their best to defend Arkansas-Pine Bluff's prolific receiver, Raymond Webber. Despite the 52-30 victory Saturday, they failed in slowing the 6-foot-3, 205-pound senior. Webber finished with 10 catches for 140 yards and drew two pass interference penalties. One thing missing from those stats? Touchdowns. He had none. And for Johnson and the rest of the JSU secondary, that was a plus.
"He's a good receiver," Johnson said, "but I felt like I am one of the best corners in the conference so I had to prove it."
What was seen by a homecoming crowd of 14,687 at Golden Lion Stadium on Saturday was the type of offensive superiority Arkansas-Pine Bluff envisioned when it shifted philosophies before this season.
Led by quarterback Josh Boudreaux, who had a hand in all seven of UAPB’s touchdowns, the Golden Lions scored on four of their first five possessions, added another touchdown before halftime and scored twice more in the fourth quarter as they coasted to a 49-20 victory over winless Mississippi Valley State.

PINE BLUFF, AR - Josh Boudreaux threw for 329 yards and five touchdowns and ran for two more scores as Arkansas-Pine Bluff defeated Mississippi Valley State 49-20 Saturday. Boudreaux was 23 of 31 and connected with Raymond Webber nine times for 159 yards and two TDs as the Golden Lions (5-4, 4-3 SWAC) had their highest-scoring output of the season. Boudreaux had scoring throws of 14, 10, 23, 46 and 42 yards while adding touchdown runs of 3 and 43 yards.
Oliver Hughes threw for 315 yards and two TDs for the Delta Devils (0-9, 0-8), who have lost 10 straight dating back to last season. Paul Cox caught 8 passes for 145 yards and a TD and Tristian Hudnall had 7 receptions for 102 yards and a score. MVSU was hampered by 13 penalties covering 177 yards.

Monte Coleman expresses almost weekly his fondness for wide receiver Raymond Webber. On Saturday, his chosen adjective was “special.” Arkansas-Pine Bluff ’s breakout star nearly brought the team back from a four touchdown deficit in an eventual 35-25 loss to Grambling State in front of an announced crowd of 29,373 at War Memorial Stadium.
The senior caught 9 passes for 243 yards with 1 touchdown, and his 71 receptions for the season set a new UAPB record. But it wasn’t enough to cancel out a second-quarter flurry that saw Grambling State score three times in just over four minutes and erase UAPB’s 10-point lead.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.- Josh Boudreaux completed 24 of 41 passes for 438 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for Arkansas-Pine Bluff (4-4, 3-3) setting a new school record for passing yards in a game and wide receiver Raymond Webber had nine receptions for 243 yards and a TD but it wasn’t enough as Grambling State defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 35-25 on Saturday in the Delta Classic 4 Literacy.
Alcorn State gets its second opportunity to play on television this season.
The Braves (3-3, 2-2) plays Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Thursday night in a crucial SWAC contest that will be televised by ESPNU at 6:30. Mississippi State defeated the Braves 49-16 last month in a contest televised by Fox Sports South.
The Braves still control their destiny of reaching the SWAC title game on Dec. 11 in Birmingham. If Alcorn win its remaining games, it will capture the East Division championship.
Jackson State at Texas Southern, noon: The Tigers (5-1, 3-1) must improve their special teams play to stay ahead of Alcorn in the East. Jackson State ranks next to last in the SWAC in extra-point attempts. The Tigers also have given up big yards on punt and kickoff returns.
Last season, when Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Alcorn State played on national television, viewers never got to see the end of the game. Nobody did. A three-hour-long lightning storm near Pine Bluff, Ark., forced officials to delay and ultimately cancel the game.
At 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Lorman, Miss., the teams meet again on ESPNU. And this time, if Raymond Webber does what he’s done for much of this season, something else — the scoreboard — might be lighting up instead.

Dezmond Beverly didn’t have a single reception before Saturday night.
And with less than five minutes remaining, Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s freshman receiver had just one catch for 12 yards, which set up UAPB’s touchdown on the opening drive. His second catch proved to be even bigger.
Beverly ran along the Alabama A&M sideline, broke a tackle and sprinted 40 yards to the end zone with 4:09 left to wrap up the Golden Lions’ 21-14 come-from-behind victory over the Bulldogs.

PINE BLUFF, Ark.- The University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions football team was able to grind out a critical 21-14 win over the Alabama A&M Bulldogs on Saturday night at Golden Lions Stadium.
Offensively Arkansas-Pine Bluff tallied 357 yards (103 R, 254 P) while AAMU amassed 338 total yards (235 R, 103 P). T.J. Shelton’s 19 yard reception put UAPB on the board first giving the Golden Lions a 7-0 edge early in the first quarter.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff went on to score a touchdown in the third quarter on a 8 yard Stephen Jones run tying the game at 14 all. A 40 yard Desmond Beverly touchdown reception with 4:09 left to play sealed the victory in UAPB’s favor.
Quarterback Joshua Boudreaux went 18-33 for 254 yards and two touchdowns. Raymond Webber continued to set the mold for Division I FCS receivers as he tallied 8 catches for 110 yards.
Waving their hands toward the sky, running toward the west sideline at A.W. Mumford Stadium after halftime Saturday night, Southern football players felt the way they wanted to feel.
At the time, they were tied with visiting Arkansas-Pine Bluff. In the first half, they had showed passion, emotion and a stronger game plan, and they felt confident that their first Southwestern Athletic Conference win in the Stump Mitchell era was a mere 30 minutes away.
They were wrong. The Golden Lions used a dominant third quarter to pull away for a 41-23 victory, burning the beleaguered SU defense for big play after big play.
Saturday night in A.W. Mumford Stadium, for the second consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference game, the Southern football team was left to lament all the times it turned the football over, all the times it committed a game-changing penalty, all the little things it failed to do.
Saturday night, all those mistakes helped Arkansas-Pine Bluff leave town with a 41-23 victory, handing SU its third straight loss in the process. The Jaguars had four turnovers, nine penalties and a handful of hiccups on special teams.
Receiver Curry Allen sat down at a table after Saturday night’s 41-23 loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff, trying to put in words what went wrong and even more importantly, how the Southern offense can recover. His answer was simple: stop trying so hard.
“We’ve been playing uptight, not really playing our game,” said Curry, a redshirt senior. “We have to relax and go out there and have fun.
There were plenty of mistakes to go around during Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s 41-23 SWAC win over Southern University Saturday night, but most came in the first half for the Golden Lions.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff helped set up an early Southern field goal with a punt interference penalty. Another Southern field goal was set up when wide receiver Raymond Webber lost a fumble deep in UAPB territory, and quarterback Josh Boudreaux later tossed an interception.
But it all came together in the second half as Boudreaux and Webber led the UAPB rally that saw it outscore the Jaguars 28-10 after a halftime tie.
True freshman Jerryan Harris plans to introduce himself to Southern’s offense Saturday night at A.W. Mumford Stadium.
So far, the Arkansas-Pine Bluff outside linebacker has made similar introductions during his first season of college football. Harris leads the Southwestern Athletic Conference in tackles with 31 through three games, a product of his solid tackling and ability to get to the action. He also has one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Not bad for a newbie.
Brutally honest about the recent shortcomings of his offense, Southern coach Stump Mitchell said it matters little who plays quarterback, who carries the ball or who runs routes for his suddenly troubled football team. What matters most, he said, is what happens up front.
“The offensive line — those guys don’t get a whole lot of credit. You only know when things are going bad,” he said. “But if we’re going to have any success, trust me: It’s not going to be because of (quarterback) Jeremiah McGinty or (tailback) Gary Hollimon, it’s going to be because the offensive line is being unsung but getting the job done.”
Before we begin, let’s get something as clear as a wide-open sky. At Southern University, this first month of football season has been grim. The offense has three touchdowns in its past eight quarters. The defense has allowed 18 plays of 20 or more yards.
And to play off of something coach Stump Mitchell said the other day, the special teams are 3-for-3. First, they allowed a kickoff return for a touchdown. Then they allowed a punt return for a touchdown. Last week, when they really, really needed the football, they fumbled a punt.
