UMES Dedicates Bowling Lanes to Coach Sharon Brummell

Princes Anne, Maryland -- In her 14th year as coach of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's bowling team, head coach Sharon Brummell has accomplished a lot. Three National Championships, five Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships, 20 All-America players, five MEAC Coach of the Year awards and two National Coach of the Year honors are just a few of the more glaring recognitions. Beyond the hardware however, Brummell has brought joy, pride, exposure, and recognition to the small Princess Anne, Md. campus and today, the school publicly thanked her for her efforts.

In a ceremony open to the campus and attended by current and former campus dignitaries and current and former players, her parents and family, the bowling lanes were formally named the Sharon D. Brummell Bowling Lanes.

UMES - 2011 NCAA Bowling Champions

"I can't believe this is happening," said Brummell in a speech at the event. "People ask me how you become a champion and I look around this room and answer, this is how you become a champion. You have people who support you in what you do," she told the large crowd packed inside the bowling center.

The six lane center, housed in the ten-year old Student Services Center (SSC) right on campus, are used for student recreation as well as by the team as one of their two practice facilities. They are adorned with championship banners, photos of all the All-America bowlers from the school's history, all coached by Brummell, photos of the national championship wins and a newly placed mural above the lanes of Brummell throughout her coaching career.

"I was in tears," Brummell added. I had seen the prototype of this but to see it in person really took me aback. I have to thank my Mom and Dad, who attend all my championships, my son Bobby, sister Colleen and husband Vince. They have been there every step of the way."

"This is a more than deserved honor," said Director of Athletics Keith Davidson. "What this woman has accomplished in her sport is amazing. Three national titles in four years and to be the first woman to win an NCAA title and the first African-American to win the NCAA and USBC Collegiate titles, what else do you need to solidify yourself as a legend in this sport? I think I can say with certainty that she is not only one of the best bowling coaches in the country, but one of the best college coaches in the country, period."

"I am just glad the campus could do something like this" said Kimberly Conway Dumpson, the University's Director of Alumni Affairs and Planned Giving who helped secure donations for the naming of the facility, including a major gift from alumnus and bowling supporter Melvin Hill. "This accomplishment stands proudly with anything else done in collegiate coaching, the entire campus, alumni and all our faculty and staff are just so proud of her."

UMES' new Interim President Mortimer Neufville also spoke at the event, stating, "Brummell is a role model for us, this recognition is well deserved."

Perhaps what summed up the occasion best were words by Dr. Hallie Gregory, the Athletics Director at Holly Grove Christian School, who was the athletics director at UMES that hired Brummell for the position. "As an athletic director you have to hire and fire a lot of people. Sometimes you get it right and sometimes you don't. But with Sharon Brummell I know that I got it right. I can rest my laurels on her and know that she has done an amazing job and made UMES the pinnacle of collegiate women's bowling."

UMES Lady Hawks signs an Elite Lady, Sweeney Style

Chester, VA -- For Shawnee Sweeney, life's motto is simple. Life is only as good as what you make of it. The harder you work the better you will become. That is not just a life lesson that is a basketball lesson for the Thomas Dale (High School) senior. Since Sweeney was five years old, shooting hoops was a poignant part of her life.

"My dad taught me how to shoot and I would keep working on it. That drive to wanting to get it right, to be perfect came natural to me," Sweeney said. Those long hard-working hours have paid off as Sweeney signed her letter of intent to play Division I college basketball at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore next fall.

Videographer: sweeney2tes; Shawnee Sweeney signs to UMES. Shawnee posted a 4.2 GPA, is in the top 25 of her senior class and played all five positions on the court at Thomas Dale H.S.

"At first I was interested in going to Virginia Wesleyan or Christopher Newport, but at the very end of my high school season, Maryland of Eastern Shore got in touch with me and asked me to come for a visit," Sweeney said. "It was love at first sight with the school, the facilities to the coaches and players."

Sweeney who primarily played shooting guard and averaged about 15 points per game liked the fact that Maryland of Eastern Shore's coaches took the time to come see her play.

Second-half surge pushes Savannah State beyond Maryland Eastern Shore

Savannah State women's basketball coach Cedric Baker admitted some things could be better, some a little worse, while summing up the Tigers' .500 season pretty accurately.

The positive shined brightly at Tiger Arena on Wednesday night. SSU received key contributions from its bench and used a solid defensive effort in the second half to pull away from Maryland Eastern Shore, 71-50.

The Tigers raised their record to 7-1 at home while evening their overall mark at 8-8. A year ago, SSU finished 9-21 overall, so .500 has a nice ring right now. "This was an important win for the program," Baker said. "The kids have bought into what we've been telling them."

UMES Lady Hawks Fall; Finish 5th in NCAA Bowling Championship

NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J.—Some things just aren't meant to be. With a team that has no seniors, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) will try again next year to claim their second NCAA Championship. They bowed out early, falling to New Jersey City University 4-1, and finishing tied for fifth in the nation. "We always come in with the expectation of winning," said Sharon Brummell, UMES head coach. "I think we got a fresh start this morning after a rough day yesterday. We played well under pressure in our win over Vanderbilt but we made a lot of mistakes and I think the team that makes the least mistakes on this shot will be the winner."

Mistakes may be an understatement, the Lady Hawks (103-37) left 15 open frames in their five games against NJCU (78-45), 10 of which were splits. "We couldn't get Paula going," said Brummell of sophomore All-American Paula Vilas. "She is the key to our engine, she starts us up. She wanted it so bad but as the lead-off we need her to strike and we just couldn't get her, or anyone for that matter, adjusted to the pattern." The pattern, Brummell speaks of, is how the oil is laid on the lanes.

Title is right up UMES Hawks' alley

University of Maryland Eastern Shore Coach Sharon Brummell holds the NCAA National Championship trophy earned by the 2008 Lady Hawk Bowling Team. The Lady Hawks are seeking another championship; however, they must get past 2010 MEAC Champion, Delaware State University Lady Hornets that are also in the NCAA Bowling Championship Tournament.

PRINCESS ANNE -- The top-ranked University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's bowling team is prepared to make another run at a national title this week. Starting today, in North Brunswick, N.J., the Hawks will make their seventh consecutive appearance at the seventh annual NCAA championship. The Hawks, who finished second to Vanderbilt in 2007 before winning a national title in 2008, are looking to recapture their winning ways after placing seventh in last year's championship.

"We've worked so hard at just doing well this year," UMES coach Sharon Brummell said. "We've had a good year, so were back in the tournament -- now the pressure is on us to do well here. Our main concern is making sure that we are still bowling on Saturday."

The tournament features eight teams (Arkansas State, Central Missouri, Delaware State, Fairleigh Dickinson, Nebraska, New Jersey City, Vanderbilt and UMES) squaring off in five-person regular team games to determine seeding. The teams then will be seeded for play Friday based on their win-loss record during qualifying. A double-elimination format then will determine which two teams are still alive Saturday to play for a national title, which will air live on ESPNU at 8:30 p.m.

HU sophomore hits four homers in one softball game

Four home runs would make a good month for many players. But for Hampton University shortstop Rebecca Magett, they came in one game -- not surprisingly, a school record. Magett, a sophomore from Grand Rapids, Mich., enjoyed the best day of her softball career in Game 2 of a home doubleheader Friday. She capped it with a game-winning two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 10-9 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore.

Magett was 4-for-5 with four runs and five RBI, countering the five RBI produced by UMES catcher Ashley Johnson. HU overcame an 8-3 deficit. Hampton (13-21, 2-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) won the opener 9-1.Magett was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBI, Nina Ferguson was 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Jada Jefferies pitched a four-hitter with six strikeouts and four walks.

Bowling increases diversity at historically black colleges and universities

University of Maryland-Eastern Shore 2008 NCAA National Championship bowlers Kristina Frahm and Jessica Worsley.

(Washington Post) -- Earlier this year, the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore's athletic department posted this poll on its Web site: "Which winter team is most likely to win the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in their respective sport?" Sandwiched between women's basketball and men's track was women's bowling, which led all other choices with just less than 44 percent of the vote.

Conference rival Delaware State's Web site had a similar question. Of the 11 sports on the ballot, bowling had a commanding lead of close to 40 percent.

These two schools are the pace-setters among the women's bowling teams in the nationally dominant MEAC, which comprises 11 historically black colleges and universities. UMES, the 2008 national champion, is the MEAC's flagship bowling program, sitting second in the National Tenpins Coaches Association top 20 alongside national powers Vanderbilt and Nebraska. Delaware State, the conference's defending champion, is ranked third and made the NCAA semifinals last spring. In total, five conference teams, including Florida A&M, Norfolk State and Morgan State, are in the top 20 out of a pool of more than 50 in the NCAA.

But women's bowling is not just the new standard-bearer for MEAC athletics; these days, the sport is also helping to change what a historically black college looks like. As the conference's best teams have cemented themselves in the national rankings, they've attracted many non-black bowlers, which has furthered diversity on campus. UMES currently has no black bowlers and Delaware State has two on its 10-person roster.

The Hawks went on a 5-1 run to cut the FAMU advantage to three at 15-12 but that was as close as they got in the game as the Rattlers pulled away. Blazeski had a pair of kills in a 4-0 run to extend the lead to 19-12 and the Rattlers won the game with the help of a sophomore Zoe Bowens (Long Beach, Calif.) service error, one of 19 on the day.

Florida A&M had an 8-3 lead in the final game before UMES called timeout. The Hawks battled back to 13-all, getting the tying point off a Gomez service error. The game saw four more ties, the last at 20-all, before The Rattlers took the match on a Woodward error.
