Forgive the Prairie View A&M Panthers for seeing double Saturday night against the University of Southern Mississippi. Not only did the visitors get knocked loopy by the Golden Eagles at Roberts Stadium, losing 34-7, but it was a pair of “Sevens” playing on either side of the football for USM that helped apply some of the most-telling, early shots.
Sophomore running back Desmond Johnson, No. 7 on offense, carried seven times for 32 yards in the first half and scored the Golden Eagles’ first two rushing touchdowns of the season, getting USM off to a 17-0 lead before an announced 27,316. Red-shirt freshman cornerback Deron Wilson, No. 7 on defense, made a splash in his second consecutive start, with four tackles, including a jarring, helmet-popping hit on Panther running back Donald Babers for a 4-yard loss, and broke up two passes.
HATTIESBURG, MS — With Prairie View A&M star quarterback K.J. Black questionable for Saturday night's game against Southern Miss, the Golden Eagles have made sure to cover all their bases on defense.
If Black doesn't go at Roberts Stadium, Jonathan Troast will step in after leading the Panthers to a 16-14 win over Texas Southern in a defensive struggle on Sunday.
Prairie View coach Henry Frazier said that Black could return against USM but will more likely be held out until next week against Alabama State.
Prairie View A&M University Panthers are scheduled to face University of Southern Mississippi on Sept. 11, 2010, is the first meeting between the 2009 SWAC champions and the C-USA Golden Eagles.
Southern Miss’ 2010 football schedule includes both 2009 Conference USA championship game participants from a year ago, the Southwestern Athletic Conference champion and a BCS automatic-qualifying conference school for the second consecutive year. Although C-USA does not release its game dates for another month for league contests, the Golden Eagles will play both East Carolina and Houston, the C-USA East and West Division champions from last season, as well as fellow league foes Marshall and UAB at Roberts Stadium.
Non-conference home dates include Prairie View A&M on Sept. 11 and Big 12 foe Kansas on Sept. 18. USM will play road games at South Carolina, Louisiana Tech, UCF, Memphis, Tulane and Tulsa. “This is another extremely challenging schedule for Coach Fedora, his staff and players,” said Southern Miss Director of Athletics Richard Giannini. “We are excited about having both teams that played in the C-USA championship game in 2009 here during the upcoming season, as well as bringing in both Prairie View A&M and Kansas for the first time. This is the second straight year we have been able to bring in a team from a BCS automatic-qualifying conference to Hattiesburg.”
HATTIESBURG, MS - Austin Davis directed the Southern Miss offense with efficiency Saturday night against Alcorn State, finding everyone of his playmakers with ease in the first game of the season. With his biggest target, DeAndre Brown, standing on the sideline in jeans, Davis picked apart the Alcorn State defense as every key player on the Golden Eagles offense had several opportunities with the ball in their hands.
"What Austin has done is he's doing a better job of managing the offense," coach Larry Fedora said. "He's got a fresh understanding of what we want him to accomplish. He's going to take the open receiver because he's reading the coverage to see where it should go." Southern Miss cruised to a 52-0 victory over the SWAC team from Lorman before a record crowd of 36,232 at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
First-year Alcorn State head football coach Earnest Collins Jr. has much better memories from his first visit to Roberts Stadium than the ones he and his Braves carried back to Lorman on Saturday night. In 2007, Collins was defensive backs coach for Central Florida when the Knights left Hattiesburg with a Conference USA victory over Southern Miss. Saturday night was a completely different story, as the Golden Eagles struck early and often, handing the Braves a 52-0 thumping before the largest crowd in stadium history - 36,232 - in the season opener for both teams.
"I'm a realist," said Collins, who was associate head coach/defensive coordinator for the Braves last season. "The first part is, we didn't execute like we should have. The second part is, to put it bluntly, we were outmanned." Collins paused, offering a possible third part.
Roars reverberated at Roberts Stadium Saturday well before the University of Southern Mississippi and Alcorn State University lined up in the historic first meeting between the intrastate rivals. Damion Fletcher’s picture, looming from the big board over the south end of the stadium, revved up the Black and Gold faithful every time. The U.S. Army’s parachutist team turned the crowd into children, with eyes turned to the sky and fingers pointing at the smoky, red swirls following the Black Daggers descent into the stadium.
But the most poignant applause came during a video tribute to the late Steve McNair, the Mount Olive native who rose to national prominence while quarterbacking the Braves and whose summer football camp was an annual fixture on the USM campus. McNair, who went on to become a standout in the National Football League with the Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens during a 13-year career, was shot and killed on July 4 in Nashville. Thousands attended a memorial service a week later at USM’s basketball arena, Green Coliseum.

LORMAN, MS — The Alcorn State Braves are on the verge of making some football history.
The Braves released their 2009 football schedule on Wednesday, which includes a trip to M.M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg to play Southern Miss. It will be the first time in the 88-year history of the football program that the Braves will play one of the three Division 1A schools in Mississippi.
Alcorn State football coach Ernest Jones said the game is a way to give the Alcorn State program some good recognition and step the program up a notch.

The Golden Eagles will host Alcorn State on Sept. 12, 2009, in the first meeting between the two schools located about 150 miles apart.
USM will pay Alcorn between $150,000-$160,000. The Braves also will get the proceeds from the first 5,000 tickets they sell and the proceeds from a second allotment of tickets to ASU, if needed, would be split.
