Former Redskins Vernon Dean terminated after drug charges

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (KTHV) -- News out of Pine Bluff  Thursday is linebackers coach Vernon Dean has been terminated.

Pine Bluff police pulled over UAPB linebacker coach Vernon Dean on January 11 around 11- p.m. for turning without a signal and an improper turn.

According to the police report, officers searched Dean's car and found what tested positive to be crack cocaine in the vehicle.



Dean arrived at Pine Bluff in 2010 after spending the 2009 season at Fort Valley State where he coached outside linebackers. The Houston, Texas native spent seven seasons in the NFL tallying 22 interceptions and winning two Super Bowls with the Washington Redskins.

Dean NFL career ended in 1988 with the Seattle Seahawks. Wellington Vernon Dean played college football at San Diego State University and was drafted in the second round of the 1982 NFL Draft.

Washington Redskins Sign Stillman's Quinn Porter

The Washington Redskins have moved yet more players around as they announced the signing of running back Quinn Porter to the practice squad today. Porter was signed to replace running back Javarris James who has been signed to the Indianapolis Colts active squad.

Porter,6’0″, 205 lbs., was an undrafted free agent signed by the Green Bay Packers in April 2010. He was waived last month but in three preseason games with the Packers, rushed for 77 yards on 21 carries with a 3.7 average. Additionally he had a punt return for four yards, a kick off return for 22 yards and a reception for six yards.

The former Packer attended Stillman College where he played in 37 games. In 511 carries he gained 2,788 yards (a 5.5-yard-per-carry average) and 24 touchdowns. Porter caught 68 balls for 887 yards and 12 touchdowns and had a 32-yard-per-carry average on 19 kick-off returns.

Former S.C. State Bulldogs to get their rightful recognition

CHARLIE BROWN PLAYED in a couple of Super Bowls with the Washington Redskins and has a pair of rings to show for it. He also had a 1,000-yard receiving season in the NFL during his six-year career.

Still, the one-time South Carolina State standout carries a couple of beefs with him. He believes his beloved Bulldogs were slighted in 1980 when they were not invited to play in the Division I-AA playoffs, and two of his fingers have never been fitted for the pair of national black college championships S.C. State won while he was there.

Brown can never rectify the 1980 NCAA ruling, but he will right the latter wrong Friday night when members of the 1976 and 1980 coaching staffs and players will be presented with national championship rings.

Mitchell has head-coaching offer from Southern University

Lyvonia 'Stump' Mitchell, currently the Assistant Head Coach/Running Backs Coach for the Washington Redskins served as Morgan State's assistant head coach/offensive coordinator (1995) and head coach, 1996-1998, posting an overall record of 8-24.

While the future of just about every member of the Redskins' coaching staff will likely be up in the air following Sunday's game in San Diego, running backs coach Stump Mitchell has an offer on the table. Southern University in Baton Rouge, La., has offered Mitchell its head coaching position, according to a news release from the school. The terms of a contract have not been worked out and the school didn't expect to make any final announcement until after the Redskins conclude their season Sunday against the Chargers.

"Stump Mitchell's 21 years in the NFL, 10 as a player and 11 years as an assistant coach, combined with his head coaching experience, will bring a wealth of diverse knowledge to our football program," Greg LaFleur, Southern's athletics director, said in the news release. Mitchell told Joseph White of the Associated Press today that he'll make a decision after the season is concluded, but the quotes in today's news release from Southern sure sounded like the school was welcoming its new coach on board.

SU picks NFL vet Mitchell

Hours before he learned his fate with Southern University, Stump Mitchell said an offer to become its next football coach would be “a dream come true.” It’s not a dream anymore. Southern’s 24-day search for a new coach ended with its original lead candidate, Mitchell, a man who likely will arrive in Baton Rouge next week with a long history in the NFL, but only three years of experience as a college head coach. Mitchell, the Washington Redskins running backs coach and assistant head coach, has agreed in principle to take over at SU next season, Chancellor Kofi Lomotey said.

“We’re very excited,” Lomotey said. “Stump will be a tremendous addition for us. I believe he’ll add a boost to our athletic department, and he’ll also bring some excitement back to (A.W.) Mumford Stadium.” The Redskins play their final regular-season game Sunday at San Diego, and technically, Mitchell cannot agree to a contract with Southern until after the Redskins’ season ends. “I think it’s great that they considered me as being qualified to take over a program like that,” Mitchell said. “They’ve offered it to me. I don’t know what’s going to happen here. But if it’s not here, it’ll be there,” he said.

After a two year paid holiday by Florida A&M, former Rattlers head coach Rubin Carter has signed on as the Lobos new defensive line coach for 2009.

• Most recently head coach at Florida A&M (2005-07) - Combined record of 16-17, but was 13-9 his first two seasons.
• NFL defensive line coach for the New York Jets (2001-03), Washington Redskins (1999-2000) and Denver Broncos (1987-88) - Coached Pro Bowl players John Abraham, Shawn Ellis, Marco Coleman, Greg Kragen, Rulon Jones and Karl Mecklenburg.

Greatest Sports Accomplishment: Doug Williams' Super Bowl Win

The position of quarterback has been a microcosm of the black man's struggle in America—a door supposedly “open to all”—except for us of a darker hue who continuously knock, kick, and scream until an answer comes.

For 80 years, the black man has fought tooth and nail to lead a professional football franchise to glory. Many came before Doug Williams, and some of them may have even been better skilled. But looking back on the life of Douglas Lee Williams—none were better prepared.

My mother says, “The Lord chooses whom he will.” If you ask Williams about being the Chosen One, he places it at the feet of hard work, opportunity, and determination more than anything.

Washington Redskins Sign (former HU) Wide Receiver Mathis

The Washington Redskins signed wide receiver Jerome Mathis, the team announced yesterday. Mathis, a member of the Houston Texans his first three seasons in the NFL, appeared in three games in 2007 before a leg injury ended his season.

As a rookie in the 2005 season, Mathis, 24, finished second in the NFL in kickoff returns with a 28.6-yard average. He scored two touchdowns on kickoff returns and went to the Pro Bowl. In his career, Mathis has six receptions for 80 yards (a 13.3-yard average) with one touchdown.

Mathis, a wide receiver/kick returner was taken in the 2005 NFL Draft, Round 4, pick 114 by the Houston, Texans. The Petersburg, Virginia native is 5-11/191.

Former Morgan State coach Mitchell joins 'Skins staff

ASHBURN, Va. - Stump Mitchell followed Jim Zorn to the Washington Redskins on Wednesday, joining the team as running backs coach.

Mitchell, the Seattle Seahawks running back coach since 1999, will also have the title of assistant head coach with the Redskins. He and Zorn worked together on the Seahawks staff from 2001 through last season. "He's been a running back in this league, and I know him very well," Zorn said. "And I know how he teaches. He's an excellent teacher."

Mitchell played nine NFL seasons in the 1980s (1981-89). He was head coach at Morgan State from 1996-98 before joining the Seahawks.

For those that do not know, Lyvonia Albert "Stump" Mitchell at 5'-9", 198 pounds was a product of The Citadel that was drafted in the 9th round (226th overall) in the 1981 NFL draft. Michell had a nine year NFL career making All-Pro one-time in 1984. The St. Marys, Georgia native still ranks as the Cardinals' all-time leader in combined yardage (11,988) and is second in rushing yardage (4,649).

Mitchell played his high school football at Camden County High (Class of '77), a 4A school in Kingsland, GA. But prior to that time he came under the tutelage of Pop Warner coaches Alvin Glover, Lemon Dawson and Ricky Anderson. Stump was the second leading rusher in the country in his senior season at The Citadel.

Mitchell is an excellent example of how you combine education with hard work, and there are no limitations on how far you can go to the top of your profession. But, Education must always be placed as FIRST priority!

For those that don't believe there is career advancement after a job as a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference head coach, read the following very slowly: Stump Mitchell is now ASSISTANT HEAD COACH/Running Backs, for the Washington Redskins, which is one of the most powerful and storied franchises in the NFL. This is a great accomplishment for a former MEAC/Morgan State University head football coach.

The only limitations are those that we set in our own minds.

For UAPB Monte Coleman, it's a matter of perspective

Coleman, one of the two great rags-to-riches stories from the University of Central Arkansas, was recently named head football coach at Arkansas-Pine Bluff after serving several years as an assistant coach for the Golden Lions and a minister in the area.

It's interesting that probably the two greatest athletes in UCA history, both from a national and international perspective, began as walk-ons. Basketball star Scottie Pippen began as a manager. Coleman, who played one quarter of high school football, was recruited by UCA coach Ken Stephens on his projected athletic ability and upon he recommendation of Coleman's brother, Sam, whom Monte still says was the best athlete in the family.

Coleman closes year for Sports Club
Monte Coleman wasn't pleased in 1978 when University of Central Arkansas coach Ken Stephens moved his all-conference senior safety to linebacker, but nearly 30 years later, he acknowledged that move as part of God's plan for his life.

Coleman, 50, a former University of Central Arkansas great who was recently named head coach at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, was the year-end speaker for the Arkansas Sports Club's 2007 season. He addressed the crowd at Ryan's on Monday....
