Bowie, Maryland -- There are no nights off in the CIAA, one of the country's most competitive Division II conferences. And that isn't expected to change this season.
Shaw, under coach Cleo Hill Jr., is the defending champion and should contend for the title again. Bowie State, ranked eighth in one national preseason poll, will be loaded, and those teams were picked as favorites to win their divisions in the CIAA preseason coaches' poll.
"I really think we can be very good this season," coach Darrell Brooks of Bowie said. "We're deep and pretty athletic, and I really like our experience this year. If we can rebound and defend, we can be a good basketball team."
Bowie State, which reached the second round of the Division II tournament last season, is led by 7-foot center Travis Hyman and point guard Darren Clark. Hyman was the CIAA's defensive player of the year, and Clark had 114 assists and averaged 15.1 points last season.

Bowie, MD - Ramono Flowers is young man among even younger men on the Bowie State University football team. The 26-year old redshirt junior tailback has had an inspiring journey to his place in the Bulldogs’ backfield.
“When I think of Ramono, I think of perseverance,” Bowie State coach Damon Wilson said. “He’s a guy who has persevered a lot to get where he is.”
After graduating from Largo High School in 2003, Flowers accepted a full scholarship to play at Central Michigan University. By the end of his redshirt freshman season for the Chippewas under coach Brian Kelly (now the coach at Notre Dame) and running backs coach Butch Jones (now the coach at Cincinnati), Flowers had some tough decisions to make.
“I had a child on the way, so I wanted to come home and work,” Flowers said. His son, Ramono Flowers Jr. is now 6.
Richmond, Virginia - The Bowie State (BSU)Bulldogs suffered their first loss of the season, falling to Virginia Union University(VUU), 32-29, in a Central Interscholastic Athletic Association (CIAA) football matchup on Sept. 24 in Richmond, Va.
The Bulldogs have been a very explosive offensive team so far this season, but it was VUU who made most off their offensive plays on Saturday. Virginia Union quarterback Cheston Hickman completed 19 of 35 passes for 320 yards, including a 39-yard touchdown pitch to Jerrell Washington in the third quarter. Washington also rushed for 82 yards and two touchdowns as VUU accumulated more than 500 total offensive yards.
Meanwhile, Bowie State didn’t find its usual offensive rhythm, turning the ball over three times. BSU senior quarterback Clifton Budd rushed for 141 yards and passed for 247 yards. But he also tossed a costly interception and the Bulldogs gave up two fumbles.
Bowie, Maryland - The Bowie State football team improved to 3-0 with a 41-14 homecoming win on Saturday against Livingstone College in a CIAA contest.
The Bulldogs had 413 yards of total offense as junior running back Ramano Flowers, a graduate of Largo High, had 82 yards on the ground on 18 carries. Bowie State is now 2-0 in the CIAA while Livingstone fell to 0-3 overall.
“I think it was a good win for the University and hopefully picked up the spirits of the alumni, students, faculty and staff after the tragic loss of one of our students (Dominique Frazier) earlier in the week," Damon Wilson, the head coach for Bowie State, said on the school's athletic website.
Frazier died on campus last week after an apparent arguement with one of her roommates at the school, according to Patch and other media outlets. A moment of silence was observed just prior to kickoff for Frazier, according to a school athletic spokesman.

Bowie, MD - About 8 p.m. Thursday, the students in Suite 208 of the Christa McAuliffe residence hall were getting ready for what should have been a fun night out at Bowie State University’s homecoming week comedy show.
Alexis Simpson, a 19-year-old newcomer to the college, abruptly turned off the iPod playing in the suite. Everyone asked her to turn the music back on. “No,” she said, according to an account in court papers.
Then the simplest of roommate spats turned deadly.
Simpson and Dominique Frazier, 18, started to yell, and the fight turned physical. Someone in the suite split them up, pushing Simpson into her bedroom. But Simpson came back with what looked like a knife and stabbed Frazier in the neck, the court papers say.
During what was supposed to be a festive homecoming week, the campus of Bowie State University was instead quiet and somber Friday after a student was arrested and charged with killing one of her roommates.
According to police, Alexis D. Simpson, 19, fatally stabbed 18-year-old Dominique T. Frazier on Thursday night in the dorm where they both lived. Charging documents show that the confrontation was sparked by a seemingly innocuous act: Simpson turned off Frazier's iPod as they prepared to go out, records show.
Campus police found Frazier in the second-floor hallway of the Christa McAuliffe Residential Building, where she was unconscious and bleeding from the torso. She was taken to Prince George's Hospital Center where she later died, according to Maryland State Police.
Simpson turned herself in at a Prince George's County police station around midnight. She has been charged with first-degree murder and related charges, and was being held at the Prince George's County Detention Center without bond.
WORCESTER, MA — Committing three turnovers in a game would drive any coach crazy. But three turnovers in a half?
Unfortunately for Assumption College football coach Cory Bailey, that’s what the Greyhounds did yesterday, turning the ball over three times before intermission, and five times overall, in a 28-7 loss to Bowie State in the season opener for both teams. Assumption used three quarterbacks, who combined for four of the five turnovers.
Sophomore Derek Fernandes threw an interception that was taken back 40 yards for a touchdown, and lost a fumble in the second half. Fernandes replaced freshman Sean Mayo after the first-year player injured his ankle. Kevin Bumpus, another freshman, started the second half, lost a fumble and was picked off.
“We’re young at a lot of spots,” Bailey said. “When you’re young at quarterback, turnovers kill you.”
Washington, D.C. - As a 6-foot-7 high school senior, Travis Hyman wasn’t courted by big-name college basketball programs. In fact, the Annapolis native and 2005 Old Mill High School graduate says he received no offers from Division I colleges but smaller college programs expressed an interest instead.
“It wasn’t that many,” Hyman said, who noted that Lebanon Valley College and Allegany College of Maryland were among the interested schools. However, after a brief stint at Anne Arundel Community College, Hyman landed at Division II Bowie State University in Prince George’s County.
“They gave me a full scholarship,” said Hyman, now a 7-foot, 245-pound center. “I took it.”
Hyman, a rising senior, helped lead Bowie State to a 23-6 record last season including a 16-2 conference mark. The Bulldogs finished the 2010-2011 campaign unbeaten at home with a 13-0 record. Hyman averaged 15.2 points and 9.5 rebounds per game and registered 104 blocked shots.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia State will open its 2011-12 men's basketball schedule against a pair of CIAA programs in a West Virginia Conference arena.
The Yellow Jackets, facing a rebuilding year after losing five starters from a second-place WVC club (20-10), will play Bowie State then Virginia State in the Clarion Hotel Classic at Shepherd to open Coach Bryan Poore's 13th season at the Institute school.
Those Nov. 11-12 are two of the four non-conference games for State. WVSU also has a home-and-home deal with Johnson C. Smith of the CIAA. The Jackets' schedule is completed by the league-mandated 22 WVC games.
"Our non-conference schedule is complete with (Atlantic) regional games against quality CIAA teams that should help us in the regional rankings," Poore said. "We also are fortunate to only have one of those actually on the road, with the two neutral site games in the Shepherd classic.
"The Conference portion of the schedule is a flip-flop of last years in the two-year cycle adopted by the WVC. We have an early home stretch and a late road stretch, so I guess it balances out."
Bowie, MD - Forty-one current and former student-athletes, managers and cheerleaders were among Bowie State University graduates who received degrees in the 2011 Spring Commencement – Friday, May 20th in BSU's Bulldog Stadium.
“We are very proud of our student-athlete graduates today. These young men and young ladies are the true examples of student-athletes. They have embraced the mission of the Athletic Department and understand the importance we have stressed about academics. It is a proud moment for our coaches and administrators to be a part of the joyous occasion”, said Athletic Director Anton Goff.
The graduating class included six student-athletes who graduated with honors, BSU Athletics Male Student-Athlete of the Year Sterling Grant-Jones, two-time winning CIAA Softball Champion Danielle McClay, two-time winning CIAA Bowling Champion Rebecca Frusciante and Jatyra Heath member of the Women's Volleyball team who won this year's CIAA team's highest grade point average for women's volleyball.

According to our buddies at National Football Post, the 6'4, 315 pound tackle is 'on the radar' for the Colts.
Just FYI: Alabama A&M produced Colts all-world defensive end Robert Mathis. Indianapolis also conducted a private workout for Bowie State wide receiver Derrick McPhearson. McPhearson returned punts and kicks in college. He also played defensive back and even a little QB.
RICHMOND, Va. - The Bowie State University Lady Bulldogs won their sixth straight game, improved its season record to 20-16, 14-4 CIAA and swept Virginia Union University 15-1 and 13-5. In the first game, Virginia Union's Valeria Cantu gave up just three earned runs and the Lady Panthers committed nine errors. Bowie State rocked VUU pitching for 14 hits in the opener with sophomore Justine Smith (Silver Spring, MD, James Hurbert Blake)leading the Lady Bulldogs with three hits in four plate appearances. Four other BSU players had at least two hits in the first game of the doubleheader. FreshmenMariela Hernandez (Del Rio, TX, Los Fresnos)and Renelle Traylor (Hayward, CA, San Lorenzo)shared Bowie State pitching responsibilities going three and two innings respectively. Hernandez improved her season record to 7-5, striking out five. In the night-cap, VUU's Linnette Johnson also gave up just three earned runs, but the Lady Panthers committed 10 errors. Freshman Adria Lewis (Cumberland, MD, Fort Hill)tallied two hits in game two and five other BSU players recorded one hit each. Traylor led Bowie State with three RBI in the final game to go along with her fourth homerun of the season. LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. - Playing in their third CIAA Round-Up of the season, the BSU Lady Bulldogs women's tennis team won three of five matches. With the three victories, Bowie State improves its overall record to 7-9 overall.
Day one of the three-day Round-Up event hosted by Lincoln University of Pennsylvania was postponed due to inclement weather. When the Lady Bulldogs were able to take the court on Saturday (4/9), Bowie State lost matches to Virginia State University (8-1) and Chowan University (7-2), but defeated Virginia Union University 5-4.
The final day of competition (4/10) was all Bowie State as the Lady Bulldogs rolled to victories over Elizabeth City State University (7-2) and Lincoln University of Pennsylvania (8-1).
Bowie State is scheduled to play their only home match of the season Friday (April 15) versus Coppin State University in a non-conference match. Match time is 2 pm and will played on the BSU campus.
BOWIE, Md. - Bowie State University will kick off its 10-game, 2011 season with a September 3rd road game at Assumption College (Worcester, Massachusetts).
The Bulldogs open the home portion of their schedule Saturday (September 10th), hosting Benedict College at 1 pm. Bowie State begins conference play September 17th, welcoming the Blue Bears of Livingstone College to Bulldogs Stadium.
Bowie State hits the road in week four and five, traveling to Virginia Union University (September 24th) and Virginia State University (October 1st).
Saturday, October 8th will mark Homecoming on the Bowie State campus with the Bulldogs entertaining the Tigers of Saint Paul’s College.
Bowie State will pack their bags for three straight road games in weeks seven, eight and nine. The Bulldogs first stop will be at the Lincoln University of Pennsylvania Lions on October 15th followed by a key Northern Division clash at Elizabeth City State University on October 22nd. Bowie State makes a trip to Shepherdstown (WV) – October 29th to battle the Rams of Shepherd University.
Bowie State will close out the regular season at home (November 5th) against the Hawks of Chowan University at 1 pm.
Specific home theme days and final game times for all games will be released at a later date.
(BOWIE, Md.)-- Bowie State University is ready for the 2011 CIAA Bowling Championships after an outstanding regular season. The Championships will be held Saturday (March 19th) through Monday (March 21st) at AMF Durham Lanes in Durham, N.C.
“I am very proud of how the girls conducted themselves this season,” said head coach Ken Scott. “It took a lot of hard work and dedication to repeat at divisional champions and we’re looking forward to a very good (CIAA Championships) weekend.”
The Lady Bulldogs finished atop the CIAA Northern Division standings with a 48-1 mark against CIAA opponents. They are one of seven teams with a winning league record. The Lady Bulldogs are 62-2 overall including a 16-1 mark in Baker matches.
As a team, Bowie State ranks second in Team Results (1,018), Total Pins Average (855.9) and Baker Average (167.7), third in High Baker Series (762) and fourth in High Baker Score (235).
Individually, senior Verra Diggs (Fort Washington, MD, Oxon Hill, Hampton Univ.) leads Bowie State with a 187.36 average, which includes a perfect game during the CIAA North and South Round-Up (February 4th). Senior Tycora Brown (Pocomoke City, MD, Pocomoke) ranks seventh in CIAA Top 200 Scores (246) and is joined by fellow seniors Dominique Carroll (Bowie, MD, Bowie) (244) and Rebecca Frusciante (Mahopac, NY, Mahopac) (214). Freshmen Belinda Burns (Temple Hills, MD, St. John's) and Taccarra Matthews (Laurel, MD, Laurel) are also a part of the Top 200 list with games of 214 and 207 respectively.
The first day of the Championships starts Saturday at 11:50 a.m. with the awards program. The matches begin at 1 p.m.

WEST LIBERTY, WV - Indiana University of Pennsylvania fell into a 14-point hole in the opening seven minutes of the game before the trio of Ashton Smith, Julian Sanders and Scooter Renkin rallied the Crimson Hawks to a 94-81 win over Bowie State University in the semifinals of the NCAA Atlantic Region.
“I’m really proud of my basketball team and happy for the opportunity to be here (NCAA’s)”, said second year Bowie State coach Darrell Brooks. “We lost to a very good and experienced basketball team that reached the Division II finals last season, and they understand this regional tournament and hopefully our young team will learn from this experience and be back here next year.”
The Bulldogs made four 3-pointers in the first six minutes of the game and built an 18-4 lead on a steal by junior Darren Clark (Largo, MD, Largo, Lincoln University of Pennsylvania) with 13:22 left in the half. Ashton Smith hit a jumper on IUP’s first shot attempt of the game, but the Crimson Hawks missed four shots and committed six turnovers as the Bulldogs surged ahead.
Renkin got the Crimson Hawks comeback started when he converted a steal into a layup and was fouled, making the free throw for a three-point play. Smith made three buckets, including a 3-pointer, and Willi Estrella made two free throws at the 10:22 mark to cap a 14-2 run that pulled IUP within 20-16.
IUP fell into a 14-point hole in the opening seven minutes before the guard trio of Ashton Smith, Julian Sanders and Scooter Renkin rallied the Crimson Hawks to a 94-81 win over Bowie State in the semifinals of the NCAA Atlantic Region tournament Sunday in West Liberty, W.Va.
IUP (26-5) won for the 13th straight time and will face West Liberty in the championship contest for the second straight year on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The host Hilltoppers advanced with a 98-93 victory over Shaw. The Crimson Hawks defeated West Liberty 84-72 in the regional final at home a year ago and then won twice at the Elite 8 to advance to the national championship game.
WEST LIBERTY, W.V. - Yuseff Carr scored 21 points but Mansfield was unable to overcome a slow start in a 79-59 loss to Bowie State in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Saturday afternoon at West Liberty University.
"We played hard," said coach Rich Miller. "But we didn't shoot well and we turned the ball over too often. In the end, it proved to be too large of a deficit to overcome, especially against a team as talented and athletic as Bowie."
Mansfield was held without a field goal for almost the first 6 minutes and trailed 19-4 before Kurtis Levere hit a jumper for the Mountaineers' first basket. Mansfield (18-10) cut the lead to 21-12 a little over 2 minutes later when Levere hit another jumper. A field goal by Derrison Anthony midway through the first half got Mansfield to 25-18 but the Mountaineers pulled no closer and trailed 45-25 at the half.
WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. -- A dreadful start spoiled Mansfield University's chances in the NCAA Division II men's basketball tournament. Just 5:10 into the game, the Mountaineers trailed by 16 points on the way to a 79-59 loss to Bowie State in an Atlantic Regional first-round game Saturday at West Liberty University.
Yuseff Carr provided most of Mansfield's offense, scoring 21 points and pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds. Mansfield (18-10) was down 19-3 before it rallied to close to within six at 23-17 with 10 1/2 to go in the first half.
WEST LIBERTY, WV - Making their first post season appearance since 2005, Bowie State University took advantage of the opportunity and defeated Mansfield University 79-59 to advance to Sunday’s 5 pm NCAA Regional semifinal.
Bowie State (23-5), ranked No. 19 in the final NCAA Division II poll, led from start to finish and converted 18 Mansfield turnovers into 32 points. The Bulldogs bolted out to a 17-4 lead before the first media timeout and shot 51 percent from the floor in the first half, knocking down 18-of-35.
Mansfield (18-10) really struggled in the first half of play, hitting only eight-of-28 (29 percent) from the field.
Bowie State held a double-digit lead until a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer by Mansfield’s Derrison Anthony trimmed the Bulldogs lead to 23-17 at the 10:34 mark of the opening period. Bowie State went on a 17-3 run over the next 10 minutes and used that momentum for a very comfortable 45-25 cushion by halftime.
Indiana University of Pennsylvania ("IUP") survived a second half scare that saw West Virginia Wesleyan cut a 21-point deficit down to six, and the Crimson Hawks advanced in the NCAA Atlantic Region tournament with a 66-59 victory over the Bobcats in a quarterfinal game Saturday in West Liberty, W.Va.
IUP (25-5) won its 12th in a row and will face Bowie State in the first semifinal game Sunday at 5 p.m. The Bulldogs defeated Mansfield 79-59 in their first round game. The Crimson Hawks avenged a 73-71 regular season loss to West Virginia Wesleyan and will look to do the same vs. Bowie State, which handed IUP a 71-68 defeat on November 20.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Named the CIAA Defensive Player of the Year, Bowie State junior Chanita Jordan (Philadelphia, PA, University City, North Carolina State) is known for blocking a multitude of shots.
But she changed this game on offense.
Jordan, who averages just 8.3 points per game, scored seven in a span of 50 seconds midway through the second half in Bowie State’s decisive run to lift the Lady Bulldogs past Winston-Salem State 63-56 on Tuesday evening and into the CIAA Tournament semifinals.
Jordan finished with just two rebounds, though she did record four blocked shots – more on those in a minute -- but the 6-foot-4 junior center led the No. 2 seed from the CIAA North with 15 points on six-of-13 shooting. Her seven points in less than a minute fueled a 13-3 Bowie State run that gave the Lady Bulldogs a 52-40 lead with 8:31 to go.
“I just had to make sure I had the right form,” said Jordan, “and fortunately, they went in today.” But don’t think for a moment that Jordan is thinking about changing her game.
When Winston-Salem State (17-11) managed to trim the deficit under 10 points with less than six minutes remaining, Jordan swatted away back-to-back shots from the Lady Rams’ Jazmine Wilson deep in the paint as the Lady Bulldogs (18-9) were able to stem the Winston-Salem State comeback attempt.
Lady Rams take Heartbreaking 63-56 Loss in CIAA Quarterfinals
CHARLOTTE, NC - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (17-11) gave it their all, but the team fell short in a heartbreaking 63-56 loss to the Bowie State Lady Bulldogs (18-9) in the quarterfinal round of the 2011 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) tournament, Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Rams played a great game, but could not overcome a big second half effort by the Lady Bulldogs.
"It was a hard fought ballgame for us. I really think we had a three-minute stretch during the second half where we really lost the ballgame," WSSU head women's basketball coach Stephen Joyner, Jr. said. "I think outside of that three-minute stretch, we actually played pretty even with them and actually had them in the ballgame that we wanted. But nevertheless, we didn't finish out what we came here to do and Bowie [State] moves on."
Running back Isaac Redman of the Pittsburgh Steelers has traveled from the CIAA to the Super Bowl, a journey not many players make. Redman is the career rushing leader at Bowie State and had championship-game experience in college, playing in a 2005 CIAA title-game loss to N.C. Central. His next title game will be Super Bowl XLV on Feb. 6, against the Green Bay Packers.

"I would say it's a little bit of a larger stage," joked Coach Damon Wilson of Bowie State, who was an assistant when Redman played there. "But that kid deserves it because he worked his tail off to get where he is, and all of us here at Bowie State couldn't be prouder."
Redman, who ran for 3,300 yards in college, signed with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2009 and spent last season on the practice squad. This season he played in every game as Rashard Mendenhall's backup, rushing for 247 yards on 52 carries (4.8 ypc) and catching nine passes for 72 yards and two touchdowns.
The Bowie State men’s basketball team made the best of its weekend with a surprise victory over one of the best teams in the country. Heading into Nov. 20, the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Crimson Hawks were ranked No. 2 in the entire Division II conference of the NCAA, but that didn’t help them stop the BSU Bulldogs from claiming a 71- 68 home victory.
The Bulldogs may have won by only three points, but the game wasn’t as close as the score suggests. BSU led by as many as 14 points late in the second half, and kept the Crimson Hawks away from any chance of wining the game.
BOWIE, Md. - Bowie State University held off a furious late second half rally by Indiana University of Pennsylvania and defeated the Crimson Hawks 71-68. Indiana (Pa.) (1-1) came into the game ranked #2 in the early D-II polls.
Bowie State (2-0) led by as much as 14 points in the second half (67-55) after free throw by junior Darren Clark (Largo, MD, Largo, Lincoln University of Pennsylvania) with 4:31 left to play. However, a 13-4 run put the Crimson Hawks in position to tie the game in the final seconds before the last of IUP’s 21 turnovers sealed the win for the BSU Bulldogs.
Darryl Webb led Indiana (Pa.) with a game-high 19 points followed by Ashton Smith with 17 points. Webb also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for the Crimson Hawks.
A furious IUP comeback in the final four minutes fell just short in a 71-68 loss at Bowie State, only the fourth loss in the past 38 games for the Crimson Hawks over the past two seasons.
IUP (1-1) trailed by as many as 14 in the second half and was down 67-55 after a free throw by Darren Clark with 4:31 remaining. But a 13-4 run the rest of the way put the Crimson Hawks in position to tie the game in the final seconds before the last of IUP’s 21 turnovers sealed its fate.
Darryl Webb led IUP with 19 points and 10 rebounds for his sixth straight double-double dating back to the last four games of the 2009-10 season that included the NCAA Atlantic Region championship game and all three games at the Elite Eight. Webb has 40 double-doubles in his career.
