Hampton posts 21-16 win at Morgan State to end season

BALTIMORE, MD — After struggling in the red zone all day, Hampton finally figured out a surefire way to the end zone late in Saturday's game against host Morgan State.

Switch to hyper-speed. Trailing by a point late in the fourth quarter, the Pirates drove 78 yards in 56 seconds, taking the lead for good on a 23-yard pass from David Legree to Javaris Brown with 46.4 seconds left in a 21-16 win.

"We practice 2-minutes [drills] all the time," Pirates coach Donovan Rose said. "I said, 'Make sure you stay poised.' But we got the ball to the sidelines, and I was just glad to see them do that because all of our losses have basically been down to the end like this. Our offense had to win it, and they did it."

PIRATES END SEASON ON WINNING NOTE AT MORGAN STATE

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Pirates of Hampton University closed out the 2010 season on the road against the Bears of Morgan State University at Hughes Stadium with a come-from-behind 21-16 victory.

Hampton closed out the season with a 6-5 overall record and a 5-3 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), while the Bears finished 4-7 and 3-5 in the MEAC. The Pirates snapped a four-game losing streak in handing Morgan State its fourth straight defeat.

The Pirates led in all stats at the half, except the one that counted the most: the score. Hampton trailed 9-3 at half after an 81-yard punt return touchdown by Winfred Diggs and a 36-yard field goal by Kemar Scarlett.

SC State rides big plays, defense to win over Morgan Bears

S.C. State Coach Oliver "Buddy" Pough
BALTIMORE, MD — South Carolina State's offense made the most of what little time they had on the field. FCS No. 15 South Carolina State had the ball for just under 24 minutes, but the Bulldogs used several big plays on both sides of the ball to hand Morgan State a 32-10 loss last night in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at Hughes Stadium.

The Bulldogs showed why they are ranked second in total offense in the MEAC. South Carolina State (8-2, 6-1) piled up eight plays of over 20 yards, and the defense forced a fumble, an interception, a safety, and held the Bears offense to only 154 yards even though Morgan State ran 59 plays and had the ball for 36:47.

Donald Hill-Eley Coaches 100th Game For Morgan

The Ravens aren't the only Baltimore football team playing on national television Nov. 11 -- Morgan State will be on ESPNU when it hosts No. 15 South Carolina State. The Bears (4-5, 3-3 MEAC) are coming off a 37-25 loss Nov. 6 at Norfolk State while he Bulldogs (7-2, 5-1 MEAC) beat Howard, 54-14, in their Senior Day game.

South Carolina State leads the all-time series between the schools, 28-5-1. Morgan State's last victory during the series was a 23-12 upset in Orangeburg, S.C., in 2002, Donald Hill Eley's first year as head coach.

Nov. 11's game marks the 100th since Hill-Eley came to Morgan State. Now in his ninth year leading the program, Hill-Eley has a 46-53 record, which makes him the program's third-winningest coach behind Eddie P. Hurt and Earl C. Banks.

S.C. State takes down Morgan State, 32-10

BALTIMORE, MD - No. 14 South Carolina State came into Thursday night's game with Morgan State ranked second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in offense. The Bears got a good look at why the Bulldogs are so good. Morgan State couldn't stop a South Carolina State offense that made numerous big plays throughout the game at Hughes Stadium. The Bulldogs came up with a number of long gains that helped them to a 32-10 victory over the Bears.

The game was close early; the Bulldogs had a 10-7 lead early in the second quarter. But South Carolina State (8-2, 6-1) broke it open by scoring 22 of the final 25 points to take command and win its fourth straight game.

Norfolk State's passing game too much for Morgan State, 37-25‎

Norfolk, VA - Chris Walley passed for season highs of 305 yards and four touchdowns for Norfolk State (4-5, 3-4 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) and set a single-game school record for completion percentage Saturday in a 37-25 win against visiting Morgan State (4-5, 3-3 MEAC).

After Kemar Scarlett's second field goal gave the Bears the 6-3 lead, Walley capped a 10-play drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Reggie Garrett. Walley scored again for Norfolk in the second quarter on a 45-yard pass to Nigel McCowan, and Scarlett added two more field goals, bringing Morgan to a 20-12 deficit at halftime.

QB Walley sparks Norfolk State past Morgan State 37-25

NORFOLK, VA - From nearly invisible to nearly unstoppable. The Norfolk State offense, missing for much of the year, put together its best effort against an FCS opponent and never punted in a 37-25 win over Morgan State at Dick Price Stadium on Saturday.

Chris Walley completed his first 12 passes, connected for touchdown passes with four different receivers and finished with a school record for completion percentage (90.9 percent) after a 20-for-22, 305-yard effort. "It's hard to be much better than that, isn't it?" Norfolk State coach Pete Adrian said.

NSU notes: McCowan makes first catch for 45-yard TD

NORFOLK, VA - When Norfolk State head coach Pete Adrian took over six years ago, his first goal was to put out a team that wouldn't quit over four quarters. On Saturday, Adrian reaped the benefits for finding players willing to fight for a full season.

Quarterback Chris Walley, kicker Ryan Estep and wide receiver Nigel McCowan have struggled at times this season, yet all delivered big plays Saturday. Walley was the day's highlight, Estep made three key kicks, but McCowan's moment excited the Spartans the most. The senior wide receiver began the year as a starter, was demoted to reserve, hadn't made a catch and cost the team a touchdown with a holding penalty in a 17-13 loss to Florida A&M.

Spartans Win in Offensive Shootout

The Spartans bounced back from a lackluster performance offensively last week against Howard University to defeat the Morgan St. Bears 37-25.

In the second week since the Spartans changed their offensive coordinator to Joe Blackwell, the offense played excellent the whole game. Running back DeAngelo Branche had 23 carries for 111 yards. Quarterback Chris Walley played the best game of his NSU career as he was 20-22 for 305 yards and four touchdowns and an interception. Wide receiver Reggie Garrett caught the first receiving touchdown of his career on a 10-yard fade route and wide receiver Nigel McCowan caught a 45-yard touchdown pass as Walley rolled out to the right to avoid a sack. Walley completed a pass to nine different players and the most was to wide receiver Victor Hairston who had seven catches for 92 yards.

Morgan State opportunistic on both sides of ball

One thing that Morgan State football coach Donald Hill-Eley found out about his team last weekend was his players are a very opportunistic bunch.

The Bears had to rally in the fourth quarter to get a 10-point victory over struggling Delaware State to remain a contender in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship race. Sheldon Jacques returned a fumble 2 yards for the final touchdown, adding to an already tough performance by the MSU defense.

Morgan State at Florida A&M Matchup

When Morgan State has the ball... Florida A&M has feasted on teams like Morgan State who statistically are one of the worst offenses in Division I-AA. The Bears are averaging just 3.57 yards per play and 214.1 total yards per game, which is 116th out of 117 teams. The only other team worse than 100th in that category with a winning record is Florida A&M, whose total offense is 107th.

Morgan State may have a plodding offense, but it takes advantage of scoring opportunities when they arise. In Mid-Eastern Conference play Morgan State is averaging 28.3 points per game, primarily through running the football.

Williams shakes off three interceptions, rallies Morgan State past Delaware State, 34-24

Morgan State quarterback Delonte Williams had already thrown three interceptions, two of which resulted in Delaware State touchdowns, when he calmly walked into the huddle with just over three minutes left in the game. Williams said that even though the Bears were down by three, they'd be just fine.

The redshirt freshman then directed an 85-yard drive, capped by his 34-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Hendrix with 20 seconds left. Sheldon Jacques added another touchdown on a 2-yard fumble return as time ran out to give Morgan State a 34-24 victory in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game Saturday before an announced 14,312 at Hughes Stadium.

Morgan State coach Donald Hill-Eley liked how his team overcame adversity on the last drive.

In seconds, DSU Hornets squanders victory

BALTIMORE, MD -- Delaware State has struggled all season when it comes to stopping the opponent in the fourth quarter. Saturday saw that problem reach a new extreme. With time winding down, Morgan State overcame a fourth-and-10 from its own 15-yard line and rallied for 13 points in the final 20 seconds to pull off a 34-24 victory in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game.

"That's why you have to play for every snap that's required in a football game," DSU head coach Al Lavan said. "It's not a mystery as to what happened. It's very clear as to what happened -- we didn't make enough plays when we were given the opportunity to."

Maryland, Morgan Prep For First Meeting

The University of Maryland’s 17-14 Labor Day win over Navy leaves Terrapin fans optimistic a successful start to the season signifies the revived team’s ability to play competitive football and hold its own in a talented conference.

Maryland defensive back Kenny Tate and defensive lineman Joe Vellano were awarded Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week honors for their noteworthy roles in Monday’s win, but fans are already focusing on the future.

After upsetting Navy, led by Heisman trophy candidate Ricky Dobbs, Saturday’s home game against Morgan State (1-0) -- the first meeting between the two schools -- is predicted to be an old-fashioned beat-down. However, Maryland’s shocking losses last season, including to Middle Tennessee State, make a win tricky to guarantee.

Rutgers transfer Brooks carries on family tradition at Morgan‎

After three separate recruiting campaigns over the span of nearly five years, Morgan State football coach Donald Hill-Eley finally has his man. Now, running back Jourdan Brooks is out to prove the wait was worth it. Once considered by many to be Ray Rice's heir apparent at Rutgers, the redshirt junior transferred to Morgan during this past offseason in search of a starting job. Hill was happy to oblige.

"He finally came on the third try," said Hill-Eley, who twice recruited Brooks out of Seneca Valley High as a linebacker. Running back, however, is where Brooks made his mark with the Scarlet Knights, racking up nearly 800 yards and 10 touchdowns in his two seasons in the Big East, including three 100-yard games.

Loss Of Starters May Hurt Morgan Bears

2010 preseason All-MEAC first team senior defensive back Darren McKhan

Following a promising start to the 2009 season in which Morgan State won five of its first six games, the Bears stumbled down the stretch to a 6-5 record. The fourth-place Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference finish is nearly the same conclusion predicted for the 2010 season; preseason polls tab the Bears to finish fifth.

This year’s squad will look fairly different after the departures of five starters on both offense and defense. The three most significant losses include starting quarterback Carlton Jackson, MEAC Defensive Player of the Year George Howard, and All-MEAC first-team defender Justin Lawrence. Devan James, the team’s leading rusher who totaled 639 yards, also moved on.

Morgan State not overlooking opener vs. Bowie State

Bears face challenging early-season schedule before starting goal of reaching MEAC championship.

The Morgan State football team faces a daunting schedule in the coming season, including traveling to College Park to face Maryland for the first time and a trip to distant North Dakota State in back-to-back games. And that's before the Bears open their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schedule against Howard in East Rutherford, N.J., in one of the first games at the new Giants Stadium — an experience the players won't soon forget.

But the Bears are focusing all their attention on their first game of the season, against Bowie State on Sept. 4, knowing they can't dismiss a single opponent if they are to reach the MEAC championship. "I'm looking forward to [playing in Giants Stadium], but it all starts with the first game," junior tight end Lamont Bryant said Sunday at the team's media day at Hughes Stadium." We can't look over the first game. We have to start from that game and take it one game at a time."

Playoff or pay-off? MEAC decision a 'win-win'

Norfolk, VA - There's a difficult decision ahead for Mid- Eastern Athletic Conference football, and there may not be a right or wrong answer considering both of the given options have merit.

"A win-win situation," according to Norfolk State football coach Pete Adrian.

Just as the FCS is expanding its playoff format from 16 to 20 teams this season, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schools are weighing in on the idea of giving up the automatic bid afforded its champion, beginning in 2011, to return to a bowl game against the champion of the nation's other Historically Black Colleges and Universities league, the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Talk of the potential Legacy Bowl has gone on for some time. Decision day is nearing.

Morgan State -- Maryland Agree in Principle to Meet in 2010 Football

COLLEGE PARK, MD - Maryland and Morgan State have agreed in principle to meet in football during the 2010 season, officials from the schools said Tuesday. It would be the first time the universities - located just 36 miles apart - have played in football. The game, which would be played at Byrd Stadium in College Park, would mean that Maryland's non conference schedule would include two in-state schools. The Terps are already scheduled to face Navy next season at M&T Bank Stadium (Baltimore).

Maryland is also scheduled to renew its rivalry with West Virginia next season in Morgantown. No announcement has yet been made by Maryland or Morgan State pending the signing of contracts. Reached by The Baltimore Sun, two Morgan athletic officials and a Maryland official said Tuesday that an agreement had been reached in principle and that details could be completed soon. They all said the game would be played in September.

Playing Maryland would give Morgan State, a Football Championship Subdivision team that plays in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, a chance to gain valuable media exposure. The men's basketball team upset Maryland last season and later reached the NCAA tournament. The Bears began 5-1 in football last season and finished 6-5, 4-4 in the MEAC. The team's toughest non conference game last season was against Akron, which won, 41-0. Morgan State football coach Donald Hill-Eley declined to comment. "As soon as the school has a signed contract, he'll be the first one to speak with you," Morgan State athletics spokesman Leonard Haynes IV said.

Morgan State is scheduled to play the following programs listed below in 2010. The Bears are seeking one out-of-conference money game to replace Akron. Local rival Towson is not on Morgan's schedule for 2010 and the Tigers are scheduled to play at Indiana in a Thursday night, Sept 2, money-game opener. Expect MEAC newcomer North Carolina Central University Eagles to replace Towson and to play the Bears in Baltimore. Winston-Salem State University Rams drops from the Bears schedule as they move back to the CIAA and Division II.

Baltimore proving to be Bears’ den - Morgan State eyes Mid Eastern Athletic Conference

BALTIMORE - Morgan State coach Donald Hill-Eley doesn’t have to continually remind his players of their goal of winning a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title any more — they do it for him. “Before you had to sell them on the fact that they didn’t want to be part of a losing tradition and they just wanted to be competitive,” Hill-Eley said. “I hear them talking about championships, but I see them doing extra laps, I see them putting in extra time in the weight room.”

The Bears, coming off of consecutive 5-6 seasons, have their sights set on a MEAC title and automatic berth in the 16-team Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. Morgan State’s six losses last season, were by an average of 6.5 points, with none by more than eight.

Offensively, the Bears must replace Chad Simpson, the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year last season. The leading candidate to fill the void left by Simpson, who signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent, is redshirt sophomore Devan James, who rushed 418 yards and two touchdowns on 85 carries last season.

Morgan State's Hill-Eley talks Bears football recruiting class

Photo: Morgan State University head football coach Donald Hill-Eley.

Signing Day earlier this month was a fruitful one for Morgan State head coach Donald Hill-Eley. The Bears signed 23 players to its 2008 recruiting class, including four transfers from DI programs. Hill-Eley was kind enough to answer questions about MSU's recruiting class last week.

From the looks of your class on paper, it appears defense -- and linebacker in particular -- were heavy areas of emphasis. Do you feel you adequately addressed those needs?

Hill-Eley: Yes, we needed to beef up at the linebacker spot as well as the defensive line. I think we got some impressive young men where in the past we had to take freshmen and sit them out a year of two to get them up to playing level. But we’ve got a group of young men who can come in and at least help us out on special teams. Because of the program and the continuity, we’ve been able to recruit a little bit better athletes every year. Every year it’s gotten better with the quality of the athletes. We’ve gone from no-star kids to two- and three-star kids. So it’s putting us in the game that we’re getting more of the first-tier than second-tier players.

MSU Coach Donald Hill-Eley: A difference maker!

Photo: Morgan State Roderick Wolfe is set to graduate in May 2008.

As a football coach, Hill-Eley is a notch above most and as a human being--even touchdown Jesus would approve.

CBS News correspondent Randall Pinkston gives us all a glimpse of Morgan State University's Coach Hill-Eley in an article entitled, "From Living On The Streets To Scoring On The Field."

Hill-Eley is truly a difference maker and an amazing person....

From Living On The Streets To Scoring On The Field

Football Coach Don Hill-Eley of Morgan State University could have lived anywhere in the Baltimore area. He chose to live near Morgan State, in “the hood.” That decision led to another one – patronizing a grocery store near his home where he met Roderick Wolfe.

The meeting, five years ago, led to a story of faith, discipline, and success that is still unfolding. Roderick was a high school football player who did not seem destined for success.

“What did Roderick look like when you first saw him?” I asked the coach.

“He was tall, malnourished, and very dirty. He really looked homeless”, said Hill-Eley.

“He told you he played football?”

“Yup. Told me he played football, told me he had good grades.”
Roderick Wolfe looked homeless because he was homeless. He moved from house to house, sometimes with family, usually with friends. His father, a drug-dealer, died when Roderick was 10. By Roderick’s senior year in high school, his mother was on drugs, the family evicted from their home, Roderick and his siblings scattered to the winds.

Morgan State signs football coach to new contract

Photo: Morgan State University head football coach Donald Hill-Eley signed on to Bears until 2010 with options to 2012.

Morgan State University president Dr. Earl S. Richardson offered and Coach Donald Hill-Eley accepted a new contract covering a period of three years with two one year unilateral options for the university. Coach Hill-Eley has resurrected the Bears to respectability under his tenure of six seasons with a 30-37 record.

Prior to his hiring, Morgan State had 22 consecutive seasons of being the cupcake of the MEAC. They finished 2006 and 2007 with identical 5-6 records. However, the Bears proved to be a tough opponent for the upper echelon leaders of the conference and was one of the better teams that played consistent during the season.

At age 38, Coach Hill-Eley shows the potential to dominate the MEAC with his tough defense and dominating run offense. The Bears are clearly on the rise and with a few fair calls by MEAC officials, could have easily won two more games in '07.

Morgan State has also established a good recruiting pipeline to South Florida and Hill-Eley was able to obtain Football Bowl Championship star quality transfers in MEAC Offensive Player of the Year--running back Chad Simpson (Miami) from University of South Florida, corner back Darren McKahn from Connecticut and offensive tackle Robert Norris from Virginia Tech. Not only is Hill-Eley getting good FBC transfers, but he is getting high school kids on the recruiting radar of some major FBC programs.

We believe this is a great move for Morgan State and the MEAC. Coach Hill-Eley contract was due to expire on December 31, 2007. The monetary value of the contract has not been released, but the document was reported to have been signed on this past Wednesday. You can bet the mortgage money it is considerable less than the one year deal signed by Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden for $2.5 million.
