Carroll excited about coaching opportunity with SCSU Bulldogs

Orangeburg, S.C. - Trumain Carroll called it the "longest drive" he has ever embarked upon. The Houston native had just completed a grueling road trek through seven states, 1,035 miles and 17 hours from Kansas City, Kan., to Orangeburg in a loaded U-Haul truck which hauled his car on a trailer. Helping Carroll pass the time cruising through the southern states was his father, Kenneth, a former offensive lineman for Texas Southern.

The breathtaking view along Interstate 40 through the Great Smoky Mountains provided a scenic moment along the long ride for the former Oklahoma State linebacker and defensive end. "That was about the most beautiful sites that I had ever seen at least on a drive before in my life," Carroll said. "I was like ‘Wow! The beauty of the East Coast!'"

Upon reaching the final destination Tuesday, Carroll eagerly headed to South Carolina State University to meet with head football coach Oliver "Buddy" Pough.

SCSU adds new men's hoops assistant

As a men's basketball assistant coach for Winston-Salem State, Murray Garvin experienced his share of wins and losses against South Carolina State. This season, Garvin will try to help head coach Tim Carter and the Bulldogs regain their winning ways as he told the Winston-Salem Journal he plans to head to Orangeburg.

"We did some good things at Winston-Salem State and I wish (Rams' head coach) Bobby (Collins) and the school nothing but the best," Garvin told the Journal.

In three seasons at Winston-Salem State, Garvin worked with the post players and was responsible for coordinating the Rams' travel and academics. He also spent four years as the head men's basketball coach and athletics director at Clinton Junior College in Rock Hill.

SC State Downs Delaware State 64-59 in MEAC Tourney Action

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – South Carolina State senior Darnell Porter scored 15 points, including a crucial 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down with 3:10 remaining to lead the ninth-seeded Bulldogs to a 64-59 win over eighth-seeded Delaware State in opening round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum Tuesday.

Porter's basket put Coach Tim Carter's team ahead 56-51 and the Bulldogs held on to advance to Wednesday's quarterfinals against top-seeded Bethune-Cookman at 7 p.m.

Junior Joe Ikhinmwin came off the bench for 10 points and seniors Rio Pitt and Wesley Telfare added nine each in the win. Pitt also had a game-high nine rebounds, including a pivotal one off a Tyvon Williams miss of a one-and-one opportunity with 39.6 seconds remaining and SC State ahead 58-53.

Carter adds seven to SCSU men's basketball team

With the exception of the coaching staff and four returning starters, the 2008-09 South Carolina State men’s basketball team will look altogether different than last year’s edition.

Last year’s 20-loss campaign only served to expedite head coach Tim Carter’s ongoing make over of the team. Taking advantage of the scholarships made available with the departure of four players and the dismissals of David Cobb and Derrick Davis, Carter was able to add seven players during the recently completed signing period:

- Guard Jimmy Williams (6-4), East Laurens High School in Dublin Ga.- The Class 2-A Player of the Year in Georgia, he averaged...

Carter says future could be bright for SCSU Men

It takes Tim Carter a few seconds to find the word to describe his just-completed inaugural season as South Carolina State men's basketball coach.

When he does, the word of choice is more than understandable and fitting following a campaign which saw the Bulldogs lose the most games in school history.

"Without a doubt, I was say this was the most challenging year in my coaching career," Carter said Monday.

The 13-20 overall record only tells a part of the story for what Carter experienced in his first season. Taking over a program demoralized by three straight losing seasons and the controversy which ultimately led to the firing after one season of predecessor Jamal Brown and a brutal non-conference schedule, Carter faced the dual challenge of trying to erase the damage on the fly while putting together a winning product on the floor.

Ousted SCSU basketball player will get appeal

Photo: Junior Forward David Cobb

South Carolina State basketball player David Cobb’s status has been changed from “dismissed” to “suspended” pending an appeal, Bulldog Athletics Director Charlene Johnson said Thursday.

Cobb was dismissed by Coach Tim Carter this past weekend in Baltimore after the team’s loss to Coppin State. The school has said the action came following Cobb’s violation of team rules.

Johnson, who is attending the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Track Championship in Landover, Md., said she has spoken with both Cobb and Carter and the matter will be handled expeditiously through the Student-Athlete Appeals Committee.

Finally, someone at South Carolina State University with some authority over the coaching staff is reviewing this matter and giving this kid his due process. Coaches are not always right, especially losing coaches under extreme stress to win.

Hopefully, this issue will get quickly resolved to the satisfaction of all concerned and the student-athlete can continue his academic and athletic career at S.C. State. The faculty must stop treating our students at HBCUs like they are throw-aways.

Some folks just have a way of creating unnecessary law suits for failure to follow appropriate internal procedures.

Was it really necessary to have a SCSU Campus Cop drive from Orangeburg, SC to Baltimore, MD to retrieve this player, when he could have returned with the team? What did that task cost the tax payers and the athletic department budget?

Next time, Coach Tim Carter--spare us the drama and use good, mature judgment.
