Hampton Lady Pirates dominate Norfolk State Spartans, 68-46

NORFOLK, Viriginia - The Hampton University women’s basketball team used a hot first half to roll to a 68-46 win over rival Norfolk State at Echols Hall on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Pirates (18-4, 10-1 MEAC) picked up their third straight win overall, their fifth straight road win and their 12th straight win over the Spartans.

Senior guard Choicetta McMillian led the Lady Pirates with 28 points behind a career-high eight 3-pointers, while senior forward Melanie Warner added 21 points and a r third double-double of the season. Senior guard Jericka Jenkins added 11 assists for her 13h straight game with at least six assists. She is now averaging 8.0 assists per game.

After Tyisha Bridges cut Hampton’s early lead to 8-6 with 17:05 left in the first half, the Lady Pirates went on a 15-5 run to take a 23-11 lead at the 11:08 mark after McMillian drained one of her five first-half treys.

Batavia Owens answered with a layup at the 10:32 mark to cut Hampton’s lead to 10, but the Lady Pirates answered with 10 unanswered points, going up 33-13 with 7:15 left in the first half when McMillian hit another 3-pointer.  Hampton led 37-23 at the half...

Bennett, Hampton Lady Pirates humble Howard

Hampton, Virginia  -  Hampton sophomore forward Alyssa Bennett scored a career-high 23 points as Hampton jumped on Howard early and didn’t let up in a Saturday’s 63-40 victory in a matchup of 10-win teams.

The game featured teams with matching 2-0 conference records and two of the league’s best players in Howard junior forward Saadia Doyle and Hampton senior guard Jericka Jenkins. But after a jittery start that saw the first first 4:30 pass without a point, the Lady Pirates (11-3, 3-0 MEAC) found their groove.

Hampton held Howard (10-6, 2-1 MEAC) to a season-low eight points and an 8.7 shooting percentage at halftime while outrebounding the Bison 25-14.

Lady Bison Win Streak Snapped by Pirates

HAMPTON, VA - The Howard University women's basketball team saw its nine-game win streak snapped by Hampton, 63-40 on Saturday Jan. 7. This is the first loss for HU since Nov. 30 against St. John's, and the widest margin of victory allowed by any opponent since Nov. 22 at Ohio State. The loss drops the Bison to 2-1 in the MEAC and 10-6 overall.

The Bison struggled to get things going on the offensive end in the first 20, as they were held to just eight points at the half – Howard's lowest scoring performance since Baylor on Nov. 11.

For the game, Saadia Doyle led HU with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting (63 percent) from the floor. Tamoria Holmes tallied 12 points and five rebounds.

LADY PIRATES STIFLE HOWARD IN DOMINATING CONFERENCE WIN

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women’s basketball team established control early Saturday evening at the HU Convocation Center, stifling Howard offensively en route to a 63-40 win.

In the win, Hampton snapped the Lady Bison’s nine-game winning streak and handed Howard its first conference loss. The Lady Pirates (11-3, 3-0 MEAC) also established season lows in opponent’s field goal percentage and points allowed in a half.

The Lady Pirates have also won 15 straight games at home, as well as five straight over Howard.

Sophomore forward Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) led the Lady Pirates with a career-high 23 points on 11-for-16 shooting, while also tying her career high with 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Hampton's Brandon Peguese signed by Philadelphia Eagles

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Philadelphia Eagles have signed former Hampton University defensive standout Brandon Peguese, the team announced on Tuesday.

Peguese (Greensboro, N.C.) was a Sports Network FCS All-American and First Team All-MEAC selection last season, after finishing third on the team in tackles with 85 (38 solo, 47 assisted). He also finished third in the MEAC with 8.0 sacks in 2010, while also ranking second in the conference in tackles for loss with 23.5 for a total of 94 yards.

For his career at Hampton, Peguese tallied 179 tackles and 18 sacks. In 2009, Peguese was named Second Team All-MEAC after leading the conference with 7.5 sacks.

Peguese was one of nine rookie free agents signed by the team.

Peguese is the second Pirate to be picked up by an NFL team this season; defensive lineman Kenrick Ellis was selected in the third round of the NFL Draft back in April by the New York Jets.

Academic Progress Rate performance costs Hampton University in football, men's indoor track

Hampton, VA -- Hampton University lost 6.3 scholarships in football and 0.28 in men's indoor track in the 2011 Academic Progress Rate data released Tuesday by the NCAA, mirroring a larger trend among historically black colleges and universities, which continue to struggle with the annual measurement of classroom performance and athlete-retention rate of Division I teams.

Norfolk State lost two scholarships from its men's basketball program.

HBCUs accounted for 33 of the 103 penalties assessed for the 2009-10 APR reporting year, a fact officials attribute to a combination of factors -- including lack of resources at the traditionally smaller, less-funded schools, as well as a high rate of turnover within the athletics department and at the presidential level.

Jasmine Lytle of New Brunswick is going to Hampton University

Coach David Six
Jasmine Lytle of New Brunswick was looking for a school that showed loyalty. As she battled through a knee injury she suffered last summer, some schools stopped pursuing her.

Hampton University never stopped recruiting the 6-1 forward and that's why she's signing a letter of intent to play for the Virgina college on Thursday.

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore was a close second for Lytle, and Coppin State and Long Island University were among the other schools in the hunt.

Jasmine Lytle scores 1,000th point in New Brunswick loss

Junior slasher LaRhonda Womack erupted for 30 points Monday to lift the South Plainfield High School girls basketball team past New Brunswick, 68-60, on the night Zebras senior Jasmine Lytle scored her 1,000th career point.

Jasmine Lytle Erupts For A Monster Game, 33 pts, 23 rbs, for New Brunswick High

It takes more than one player to win a basketball game, but Jasmine Lytle certainly came close. Despite outscoring the entire Sayreville High School girls basketball team 18-16 in the first half Tuesday night, the New Brunswick High School senior forward needed a boost from a teammate down the stretch.

“She’s a great player, and it’s hard to win games when a girl scores almost as much as your entire team does” Sayreville coach Tara Currie said of Lytle. “She’s an animal who lives off the boards, and we didn’t achieve our goal in limiting her.”

Jasmine Lytle of New Brunswick signs to play basketball for Hampton

Jasmine Lytle, a Second Team All-Middlesex County selection from New Brunswick, will sign a letter of intent Thursday to play basketball for Hampton University.

"Words can't explain how happy I am to have this opportunity," said Lytle, who plans to major in either business or psychology. "Hampton has been there with me since the beginning of the process and I really like their style of play. They give me a good chance to better myself as a player and academically."

NBA Draft 2011: Why Hampton's Kwame Morgan Could Be a Great Pick for Any Team

Excerpt:

Let me introduce you to Kwame Morgan.

Morgan is a 6'3, 205-pound junior guard out of Hampton University who just entered his name into the 2011 NBA Draft last week. He was named to the 2011 Lou Henson Mid-Major All America team, as well as the All-MEAC (Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference) second team. Primarily known as a shooter, Morgan shot 36.6 percent from downtown last season, helping lead the Hampton Pirates to a 24-9 record.

Hampton coach wrote his script

Say this for Hampton men's basketball coach Ed Joyner Jr., he has a sense for the moment.

"What better script can you write?" Joyner asked Thursday, the day before his 16th-seed Pirates were to face top-seed Duke in a second-round NCAA tournament game at Time Warner Cable Arena.

Joyner, 38, a Winston-Salem native who attended Charlotte's Harding High before playing and coaching at Johnson C. Smith, had this script already etched in his mind two weeks ago, as Hampton prepared for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Association tournament in Winston-Salem.

Hampton U. coach looking for any advantage before playing Duke

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —— Ed Joyner Jr. was taking suggestions Thursday for tools he might use to demonstrate that the task at hand is difficult, but not impossible.

In advance of Friday's David vs. Goliath matchup against No. 1 seed Duke in the NCAA tournament, Hampton University's head coach planned to show his players video of the Pirates' upset of second-seeded Iowa State in the 2001 NCAA tournament.

Joyner said, only partly in jest, that he would show them the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team's Miracle On Ice upset of the Soviets, the movie "Rudy" and anything else he could think of.

"I think they're already pumped up," he said. "Anything to show them it has and should be done."

Hampton's chore, 10 years later

From the NCAA tournament in Charlotte:

Meant to say earlier, I thought Hampton coach Ed Joyner was amusing Thursday during his media session, especially when a natural question was raised about a former Hampton U. tournament upset – 10 years ago in Boise, Idaho.

The 15th-seeded Pirates beat No. 2 Iowa State 58-57 that day – how about that; Iowa State (3-13 in the Big 12 this year) was a No. 2! And Joyner was asked why, as a Hampton player noted earlier, he’d not used that video as motivation for his team, seeded 16th, against No. 1 Duke on Friday.

“Everything, I believe, is timing,” he said. “It ain’t the right time yet. Trust me, they’re going to see it tonight along with “Miracle,” “Rudy”, anything else you can find.”

Joyner returns home to realize dream, coaches Hampton Pirates to NCAA tournament

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — They'll have a few more stories and another piece of hardware to talk about at the next Joyner family reunion, courtesy of what just occurred at the last one.

The Joyner basketball coaching tree — Edward "Buck" Joyner Sr., Stephen Joyner and his son, Little Steve — as well as assorted grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins ventured across town Saturday afternoon to Joel Coliseum to watch Ed Joyner Jr. realize a lifelong dream.

The man known to family members as "Little Buck" coaxed and encouraged and orchestrated Hampton University's men to their first MEAC tournament title since 2006.

Hampton Holds Back Morgan, Captures MEAC Title, 60-55

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The great shooting that Morgan State displayed in the past two MEAC tournament games came to a screeching halt in the second half. Hampton got some timely baskets from Darrion Pellum to help the Pirates beat the Bears 60-55 in the MEAC Tournament Championship game at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The fact that MSU center Kevin Thompson got into foul trouble was a huge factor in how the game went. Morgan State head coach Todd Bozeman said about the situation, “We need him on the floor, that's obvious. He fought hard in there, it's hard when you're at the disadvantage.”

“It was a war,” Hampton head coach Ed Joyner said. “It was what we expected, it's the one we wanted to win.”

PIRATES DEFEAT MORGAN STATE TO CLAIM 2011 MEAC BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT TITLE

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Brandon Tunnell scored 12 of his career-high 20 points in the second half and Darrion Pellum added all 12 of his after intermission to help Hampton defeat Morgan State, 60-55 in the MEAC Tournament Championship at the Joel Coliseum.

“It was a war,” Hampton head coach Ed Joyner said. “It was what we expected; it’s the one we wanted to win.”

The Pirates (24-8) denied the Bears their fourth consecutive tournament title and Joyner obtained his first ever as a head coach. The win also secured Hampton an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Hampton will learn when and where they will compete in the NCAA tournament once the pairings are announced on Sunday.

Hampton Uses Defensive Formula to Shut Down Howard and Win Tourney Title

Winston-Salem, NC—(March 12, 2011)-- Hampton University employed the same formula that it has used throughout the tournament: Keeping the game close through the first half and then parlaying the scoring of its three veterans, Melanie Warner, Quanneisha Perry and Jericka Jenkins along with some stifling second half defense to pull away from its opponents.

The Lady Pirates continued that same formula to defeat Howard University, 61-42 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's tournament championship at the Joel Coliseum.

"It is interesting that these two teams are 1-2 in the conference in scoring defense," said Hampton head Coach David Six, in his second year at the helm. "In the first half, we were feeling each other out. But in the second half, we got things going. We knew that if we did not turn the ball over and rebound well, we would win the game. We have been consistent in those areas all season."

Hampton (25-6) receives an automatic bid and will await the pairings that will be announced on Monday.

The first half was a grind it out affair with neither team being able to generate much offense. Both teams shot under 30 percent, but the seasoned Lady Pirates, who won their second straight tournament title, did just enough to maintain a 21-16 advantage at the half.

Perry, the MEAC Defensive Player of the Year and a first team All-MEAC selection, struggled early but came on down the stretch to give her team a push. She scored six points and grabbed six rebounds while Warner added four and reserve Keiara Avant tallied five.

Hampton came out and imposed its will on the young Howard team, which is dominated by sophomores and who were playing in their first tournament championship.

"I think Hampton's experience was definitely a factor, especially when you have players like Warner, Jenkins and Perry," said Howard Coach Niki Geckeler, in her first tournament championship as a head coach. "But that was not the overriding factor. We just lost our legs. We played four games to get here. We are very young and I am excited about the future."

The Lady Pirates forced the Lady Bison into bad shots and turnovers and made them pay at the other end with trips with timely baskets and trips to the foul line, where they converted on 16 of 20. Warner, Jenkins and Perry took turns as they finished with 13 each.

"We knew that we had to play defense in order to win the championship," said Perry, named the tournament MVP. "We knew that if we continued to play hard and play great defense we would be successful."

Howard (16-18) began to press on offense and in the process, missed a number of point blank shots. The team-leading scorer and MEAC Player of the Year, Saadia Doyle, had problems getting touches and it proved to be a problem for the Lady Bison. And their point guard, Cheyenne Curley Payne, who was had an outstanding tournament before this game, was held scoreless.

"Their defense was really sagging and helping out a lot," said Doyle, who finished with a game-high 16 points and seven rebounds. "It made it hard to penetrate and we did not knock down the shots that we hot earlier in the tournament."

Tamoria Holmes finished with 12 for Howard in a losing while Curley Payne pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds.

In addition to the contribution of the Big Three for Hampton, Avant aided the cause with 9 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

This is the second straight trip to the NCAAs for Coach Six and his Lady Pirates. He says that he is looking forward to the experience.

"Our performance in the NCAAs last year left a bad taste in our mouths," said Six. "We wanted an opportunity to get back there and atone ourselves. We do not just want to be there; we want to win. I think we are good enough to win."

Six was named the Tournament Outstanding Coach while Perry, Jenkins, Shawntae Payne (Coppin State), Doyle and Curley Payne were named to the all-tournament team. Perry was named tournament MVP.

Hampton women crush FAMU, claim 1st MEAC title in 7 seasons

HAMPTON — Laura Lewis and Quanneisha Perry wrapped their arms around each others' shoulders and showed no sign of wanting to let go. Hampton University's two seniors combined for 25 points and 17 rebounds in an 88-49 victory against Florida A&M on Monday night that clinched HU's first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular-season title in seven seasons.

"We are so excited," Lewis repeated, clinging to her fellow forward in a post-game interview.

"Every year, we were picked to finish fifth or fourth," said Perry, who had 13 points and 10 rebounds on Monday and now has 1,139 points and 897 rebounds in her four-year HU career. "(This year), hard work paid off."

Hampton falls short against FAMU 58-55

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University men’s basketball team lost its third straight game on Monday night, dropping its home finale 58-55 to Florida A&M at the HU Convocation Center.

Junior guard Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but his deep 3-pointer bounced off the right side of the rim.

Pellum led the Pirates (19-7, 9-5 MEAC) with 17 points on 7-for-17 shooting, while junior guard Kwame Morgan (Largo, Md.) added 13 points despite shooting 4-for-13 from the floor. Junior forward Danny Agbelese (Lanham, Md.) pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds, and junior center Milade Lola-Charles (Laurel, Md.) blocked a career-high four shots.

Hampton Pirates fall in double O.T to B-CU; fall out of 1st

HAMPTON– The Hampton University men’s basketball team fell 78-76 in double overtime to Bethune-Cookman on Saturday at the HU Convocation Center. The Pirates (19-7, 9-4 MEAC) have lost back-to-back games for the first time this season and fall a game behind Bethune-Cookman in the conference standings.

C.J. Reed hit a floater as time expired to give the Wildcats (16-11, 10-3 MEAC) the win, after the Pirates fought back with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 76-76 on a layup from junior guard Kwame Morgan with 50 seconds left in the second overtime period.

HU loses double overtime heartbreaker to Bethune-Cookman

HAMPTON — Darrion Pellum knew how important Saturday's game was in terms of Hampton University's seeding situation with the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament two weeks away.

He'd only discussed it a few dozen times with his teammates in the days leading up to HU's meeting with Bethune-Cookman, which sat tied atop the MEAC with HU at 9-3 in the conference heading into the game.

After Bethune's 78-76 double overtime victory at HU's Convocation Center, Pellum and his teammates were left to wonder what it would mean for HU (19-7 overall, 9-4 MEAC). It's a serious blow to HU's confidence heading down the stretch in what is traditionally a one-NCAA tournament bid conference — and will be again this season.

A&T upsets Hampton

GREENSBORO, N.C. — With its 74-63 victory over first-place Hampton on Monday night, N.C. A&T took an important first step toward climbing the MEAC ladder.

Playing in their fourth straight game without guard Nic Simpson, the Aggies (12-14, 7-5) weathered 27 points from Kwame Morgan to pull away from the Pirates (19-6, 9-3) in the final minutes in the Corbett Sports Center.

Simpson, who likely will be sidelined until the final week of the season with a knee injury, is A&T's second-leading scorer at 14.6 points per game. "This team has really stepped up. They really have. It just doesn't show all the time," A&T coach Jerry Eaves said. "To have lost Nic, the team has made a decision they can win."

Aggies' Streak Comes To An End

GREENSBORO, N.C. - There were times on Monday when it looked like North Carolina A&T's streak would end without much of a fight.

That is until the Aggies started to fight. They took conference-leader Hampton's best shots, and kept getting off the canvas. But missed opportunities on the offensive end, and made Hampton free throws finally finished off the Aggies in a 74-66 loss to the Pirates.

The loss brought to an end one of the most impressive streaks in MEAC history. The Aggies went four years without losing to a conference opponent at home. The winning streak lasted 30 games. It lasted so long; no current player on the roster was an Aggie when the streak began.

"A streak like that says you have had one of the better programs for a long time," said N.C. A&T head Patricia Cage-Bibbs.

Hampton University beats Delaware State 70-66 in OT

HAMPTON, VA - It was Darrion Pellum's party, but Wesley Dunning had a fine time, too.

Pellum, Hampton University's junior guard and leading scorer, had a game-high 28 points while Dunning, a reserve sophomore swingman, scored all six of his points in overtime as the Pirates held off Delaware State 70-66 on Saturday to move into second place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Dunning, who had a total of 36 points and averaged 8.7 minutes in the Pirates' first 20 games, was called upon when starting forward Charles Funches, who had eight points and 10 rebounds, rolled his right ankle with seven minutes left in regulation. Dunning opened overtime by ...

Pirates win, move to 2nd in MEAC

HAMPTON, VA – The Hampton University men’s basketball team needed an extra five minutes to beat Delaware State on Saturday evening, taking a 70-66 overtime victory at the HU Convocation Center.

The Pirates (16-5, 6-2 MEAC) outscored the Hornets 13-9 in the overtime period. Sophomore forward Wesley Dunning scored the team’s first six overtime points, and junior guard Christopher Tolson hit all four of his free throws down the stretch.

Getting defensive

It was a game only a coach could truly love. Hampton's women's basketball team, allowing Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponents just 48 points per game this season, gave up a season-low 29 to Delaware State on Saturday in a 52-29 win. The Hornets made just six of 39 field-goal attempts, which translates into a shooting percentage of 15.4.

In the first half, the numbers were 3-of-24 (12.5 percent). Seventeen of Delaware State's points came from the free-throw line. An ugly game?  "It depends on how you look at it," Hampton coach David Six said. "They made six field goals. Were they playing that badly, or we were playing good defense?"

FAMU shocks Hampton

Florida A&M basketball coach Eugene Harris doesn't take off his jacket except on a rare occasion.

Monday night was one of them. With 37.2 seconds on the clock and the Rattlers holding a three-possession lead on the top team in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, Harris was down to his white shirt and tie. On the other end, Hampton University's head coach Edward Joyner constantly wiped the sweat that had beaded up on his face, as if he knew his team's second conference loss was inevitable.

It reached the boiling point in the Lawson Center when the final buzzer went off with FAMU on top of the Pirates 62-58. Beating Hampton (15-5, 5-2 MEAC) is the biggest upset in the program's history since the team made it to the NCAA Tournament four years ago.

Rattlers Women come up short against Hampton

For 14 minutes, the Florida A&M women's basketball team executed the game plan to perfection Monday night at the Lawson Center. Then, the Rattlers stopped getting rebounds and Hampton University began to find gaping holes in their man-defense.

By the time FAMU gathered itself it didn't have enough time to avoid a 59-47 loss on a night when a win would have made the difference between being in a first-place tie with the Pirates (13-6, 6-1) or where they have fallen to fourth place in the MEAC.

Hampton 68, Bethune-Cookman 56

DAYTONA BEACH, FL -- Bethune-Cookman coach Clifford Reed thought his team "lacked passion . . . and toughness" in a disappointing 68-56 loss Saturday to Hampton at Moore Gymnasium.

"There's no excuse for our guys to come out flat and not play hard," Reed said.

Bethune-Cookman fell to 10-9, 5-1 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference as it lost its first conference game and first game at home this season. In their first home conference game, the Wildcats never led and were only able to tie the score twice. Reed said the home letdown wasn't a surprise.
