SU Jaguars fall just short against Valley

One stop. One rebound. Those were the two things Southern really needed Monday night against Mississippi Valley State. The Jaguars got one out of two, and that wasn’t enough in a 65-62 loss. With the final minute of Monday’s game ticking away inside the F.G. Clark Activity Center, the Jaguars needed one defensive stop and one defensive rebound for a chance to tie the game at the other end.

Playing solid half-court defense, they forced an off-balance shot by Valley’s Orlando Smith — and had they grabbed the ball, they could’ve tied the score. But in a scene that seemed to repeat itself time after time in the second half, the Delta Devils came up with a loose ball and gave themselves another chance to score.

Foster nails buzzer-beater for SU women

Tiffany Foster was in foul trouble, turnover-prone and stuck on the bench to begin the second half. Worse yet, she’d missed most of her open jumpers for the better part of a month. Monday night against Mississippi Valley State, she hit a big one when the Jaguars absolutely needed it.

Foster dribbled the length of the court, pulled up near the baseline and drained a jumper from 12 feet away with 0.2 seconds left, giving Southern a thrilling 47-45 win at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

“That takes a lot of guts, and my hat’s off to her,” SU coach Sandy Pugh said. “It was her first (career) game-winner, and it was a big one.”

Alcorn State Claims 2010 SWAC Softball Championship Title‎

The (Alcorn State University) Lady Braves started the day with an 11-2 rout over Grambling State to secure a place in the championship game against the six-time defending champion (Mississippi Valley State University) Devilettes. In the first inning of the title game, MVSU’s first two batters, Ashley Hobbs and Angelica Wade hoisted home runs out of the park, giving Alcorn State an early 0-2 deficit. However, the Lady Braves answered back at the top of second with a Jennie Hatch homer that drove home two runs. The game would remain knotted at two all for the next five innings.

After a brief rain delay at the top of the eighth inning, Alcorn State returned from the hiatus re-energized as the Lady Braves rattled off three hits while scoring four runs to take the 6-2 lead. The Devilettes looked poised for a scoring surge of their own after an Angelia Jones homer at the bottom of the eighth. However, MVSU wasn’t able to score again, halting a six-year conference championship win streak. Alcorn State was led by Rachel Morris who was 2-for-4 in the game while Haleigh Eubanks led the way for the Devilettes, going 3-for-4.

This is Alcorn State’s first conference championship since 1997, when they were co-champions with Grambling State. With the win, the Lady Braves are automatic qualifiers for the NCAA regional tournament. The softball selection show is set for Sunday, May 16 at 9 p.m. (CT) on ESPNU.

SWAC Soccer tourney has big impact

The Mississippi Valley State University soccer team wasn’t the only winner this weekend at the SWAC women’s tournament. The Valley campus and Greenwood’s economy took home victories as well. “It’s been great,” said Kelly Brooks, associate commissioner of the SWAC. “Valley did an incredible job of preparing for the arrival of the tournament. Their facility is beautiful.”

The Delta Devilettes ably defended their upgraded home turf, defeating Jackson State 2-1 in the final Sunday for their second SWAC title. The benefits to the local economy could be seen before even getting out of the parking lot to the stadium. License plates from California, Canada, Colorado and Florida clearly demonstrated the tournament’s draw. Moira Barnes, Debbie Johnston and Donna Gregory made the 17-hour drive from London, Ontario to watch their daughters play.

“It’s nice to get down to see our girls,” Barnes said. Her only complaint about the tournament was one common to many sporting parents: The refereeing could have been better. The Canadians arrived Wednesday and were scheduled to leave today.

Mississippi Valley tops Southern U for SWAC softball title

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — Mississippi Valley State won its fifth straight Southwestern Athletic Conference softball title Sunday. And for the second year in a row and the fourth time in that run, Valley did so by beating Southern. As it was last season, Southern forced a second game only to have Valley win.

Tournament Most Outstanding Player Brittany Franklin went the distance as Valley won the championship game 6-3. Earlier, Southern junior Lauren Dodd’s sixth-inning grand slam lifted the Lady Jaguars to a 5-2 win in the first game.
