Transfer helps keep JSU defense stout

Dandridge named SWAC player of week in first game with Tigers

Tim Dandridge hadn't heard about Jackson State's "Dark Side" defense before transferring from Minnesota after last season. But it didn't take the outside linebacker/cornerback long to learn the tradition built on that side of the ball.

Last season, the Tigers were eighth in the nation in total defense, ninth in passing efficiency, 12th in pass defense and third in tackles for loss. In his first start for JSU last Saturday, Dandridge showed he was more than capable of replacing last year's leading tackler, Malcolm Palmer.

The junior not only had eight tackles, including one for a loss, he also forced a fumble that prevented a Delta State touchdown and had two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown in JSU's 32-17 victory in the W.C. Gorden Classic.

ALABAMA STATE 34, MVSU 6: QB Dominguez, ASU's offense shine

Alabama State put its confidence in Devin Dominguez by naming the junior as the starting quarterback earlier this week. Dominguez validated that decision Saturday night, passing for 261 yards and three touchdowns to lead ASU to a 34-6 win over Mississippi Valley State.

"I'm not going to lie, I felt a little jittery when I was thinking about it before the game," Dominguez said. "But once you get on the field, it's football. The game takes over and you just have fun."

ASU coach Reggie Barlow gave his new quarterback high marks on his first start. As with any first start, there is room for improvement, but the Hornets liked what they saw. "Devin has a lot of talent," Barlow said. "He's calm and he made some good decisions and some good throws. He's got a couple of things to clear up with tempo and the clock, but all in all, he did well."

Norfolk State at Kentucky

Norfolk State (1-0) at Kentucky (1-0)
Kickoff: 6 p.m.
Where: Commonwealth Stadium (Capacity: 68,000)
TV: WMYO-58, FSN South (11:30 p.m., delayed.
Radio: WHAS-840.
Series: First meeting.
Coaches: Norfolk State -- Pete Adrian (17-17, fourth season); Kentucky -- Rich Brooks (26-35, sixth season).

Keys to the game
UK's offensive line, already adjusting to some new faces, will be without its steadiest veteran, Garry Williams, who will miss today's game with a knee injury and snap a string of 26 straight starts. That could be significant against Norfolk State's 3-4 defense, which presents an unusual look for the UK offensive line.

Key stats
Norfolk State is 0-1 all-time against Football Bowl Subdivision teams, losing 59-0 at Rutgers last season. UK is 88-23-6 all-time in home openers. The Cats are seeking their 11th straight win against a nonconference opponent.
