Busy times for Southern University’s Banks

Baton Rouge, Louisiana -- You’ll have to forgive Roman Banks if he’s a little short on sleep these days. The man has quite a lot on his mind. Originally, the first-year Southern men’s basketball coach planned on starting preseason practice Friday - but he adjusted on the fly, and with good reason.

At 9 a.m. Saturday, Banks - who finished a stellar career at Northwestern State in 1992 - will be inducted into the university’s “N Club” Hall of Fame. He and his family planned to leave Baton Rouge late Friday night, accept what Banks called “a tremendous honor,” then pack up the car and head back to SU, where the team will crank up its first practice together at 6 p.m. inside the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

“I got the call out of the blue,” said Banks, fresh from an eight-year stint at Southeastern Louisiana. “I know several years ago, when I would go up there, they would tell me my time is coming up. I guess I got voted in there when my time came up. I’m just glad to know that the body of work that you did over time, that people respect it and appreciate it.”

Grambling State 38, Northwestern State (La.) 17

GSU Coach Rod Broadway has never lost a game at Robinson Stadium since his arrival in 2007.

Football - Grambling State 38, Northwestern State 17

GRAMBLING - Against Northwestern State Saturday night, the best offense for Grambling State was the Tigers' defense. Grambling erased a two-touchdown deficit by notching three defensive touchdowns in a 6:33 span sandwiched around halftime, roaring to a 38-17 turnaround triumph over the visiting Demons at damp Robinson Stadium. The Tigers (1-1) were dominated in the first half but trailed only 14-7 thanks to three squandered red zone trips by the Demons (0-2) and a late 37-yard fumble return by Desmond Lenard to get Grambling on the board 1:57 before halftime.

Grambling soared ahead thanks to two straight interceptions, on opposite sides of the field, by senior defensive end Christian Anthony, both returned for touchdowns and a 21-14 lead less than five minutes into the second half. Both times, Anthony snatched underthrown screen passes from Demons quarterback John Hundley. On the first, he dodged NSU players and flipped a lateral to defensive back Nigel Copleand, who took it the last 10 yards to complete a 24-yard scoring return to tie the game at 14.

Grambling beats Northwestern State, 38-17

GRAMBLING -- The Grambling Tigers have beaten Northwestern State 38-17 for their first win over the fellow Louisiana-based Football Championship Subdivision school since 1974. Grambling goes to 1-1 on the year, while NSU under new head coach Bradley Dale Peveto starts the 2009 season 0-2. Grambling last beat a non-Southwestern Athletic Conference FBS school in 2004, Savannah State. It last beat a non-HBCU lower-division school in 2001, Portland State. Third-year Grambling coach Rod Broadway has not lost a game at Robinson Stadium since he arrived in 2007.

Christian Anthony put Grambling on his back for this win

GRAMBLING -- What Christian Anthony did to Northwestern State on Saturday wasn’t even fair. He was playing “Madden” on easy mode. He was the kid on the Pop Warner team that has to bring his birth certificate to each game to prove he’s not lying about his age. He was Grambling’s best offensive weapon in a 38-17 win over the Demons. And he doesn’t even line up on that side of the ball. The 6-foot-4 275-pound monster of a defensive end accounted for two Grambling touchdowns and terrorized the NSU offense for 60 straight minutes.

Fourth-quarter letdown dooms Grambling at Northwestern State

GSU Coach Rod Broadway

NATCHITOCHES, LA — The final score will say that 12 points separated Grambling State and Northwestern State on Sunday. But all that really separated them was one yard. Trailing 17-13 early in the fourth quarter, the visiting Tigers faced third-and-goal from the NSU 1-yard line. After two questionable playcalls failed to put the ball in the end zone, Grambling was turned away without a score.

Grambling can forget the three touchdowns that followed — NSU took the ball and marched down the field on a game-clinching 99-yard touchdown drive, and the teams traded scores to make the final score 31-19. The game was decided at the goal line with 12:36 left on the clock. "That's pitiful," Broadway said. "That's bad football. ... When you get the ball to the 1-yard line and can't score you don't deserve to win. You don't deserve to win."

Grambling to start Tillman at Northwestern State

Missouri transfer J.P. Tillman will start for Grambling State this week. Tillman, subbing for sophomore Greg Dillon on Saturday against Alcorn State, was 12-of-25 for 143 yards and two scores. Dillon, a sophomore, finished 4-of-8 for just 24 yards in the eventual 29-0 win for GSU.

Grambling faces Northwestern State, a fellow Football Championship Subdivision program in Natchitoches, on Saturday. Kickoff has been moved up to 2 p.m., four hours earlier than initially announced, to accommodate the Grambling band -- which has been invited to perform the next day at a home game of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars.

GSU Tigers fall in rubber match to Northwestern State

By GSU Sports Information

NACHITOCHES, La. – Grambling State closed out its opening series on Sunday afternoon with a 5-1 loss to Northwestern State at Brown-Stroud Field.

The Tigers scored in the first inning for the third consecutive game as leadoff batter Justin Kelly reached second after an error by NSU. After advancing to third after a pop fly by Adrian Turner, Jeremy Shelby drove in Kelly for a 1-0 lead with an RBI single to center.

NSU was held scoreless for two innings but tied the contest at 1-all after Mike Jaworski recorded a two-out home run to center in the third. NSU picked up where it left off in the fourth and went ahead 3-1 after coming up big once again with two runs on two outs. Once ahead, Northwestern State never looked back as starter Clayton Cooper kept GSU off-balance the remainder of the way by only allowing one hit over the next six frames.
