NCAA Investigating Texas Southern University Athletics

The investigation is on inconsistent Academic Performance Program data provided to NCAA for the years of 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, found by the present university administration and self-reported.

HOUSTON - FOX 26 Sports has learned the NCAA is investigating the athletics programs at Texas Southern University. The school was formally notified of the investigation on Oct. 18, 2010. The investigation is scheduled to be completed next month according to a letter written by NCAA vice-president of enforcement David Price and sent to TSU president John Rudley.

TSU probe nears end

The NCAA’s investigation into possible violations committed by the Texas Southern athletic department is expected to be completed in February, according to a letter the NCAA sent the school Oct. 18.

The letter, which was obtained through an open records request, was written by NCAA vice president of enforcement David Price and addressed to TSU president John Rudley. It indicated that violations mostly involve those found by the institution and the NCAA during an Academic Performance Program data review.

TSU's president calls for entrance standard

All applicants now accepted but a large majority fail to graduate

Texas Southern University's new president wants to end the school's long-standing practice of accepting all applicants, no matter their academic background, saying the policy contributes to its alarmingly low graduation rate.

President John Rudley said the change is necessary to remake the state's largest historically black university, which has been on the ropes recently because of management missteps, sliding enrollment and bad press.

TSU requires only a passing mark on the high school equivalency test to qualify for admissions, and the low standard means the university is accepting far too many students who were not prepared for college work, Rudley said. "A university shouldn't have to accept anybody with a GED," Rudley said. "That means they didn't complete high school but they can come here without the same preparation as others and then be expected to compete."

Firings, hirings at Texas Southern University signal president's resolve

First week's housecleaning demonstrates his desire for stability

Texas Southern University's new president marked his first week on the job by making sweeping changes to the top ranks of the troubled institution's administration.

"This should signal that we will make the changes required," John Rudley said Friday.

Rudley replaced the provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, Bobby Wilson, and fired athletic director Alois Blackwell.

Rudley also inherited an athletic department with budget shortfalls, poor performance on the field and in the classroom and an NCAA investigation into the tennis teams. The problems led to Blackwell's dismissal, Rudley said.

Only 16 percent of students earn bachelor's degrees within six years of arriving at TSU, compared with the state rate of 55 percent.
